2024-12-19bootstrap: pure parser and reentrant scannerPeter Eisentraut
Use the flex %option reentrant and the bison option %pure-parser to make the generated scanner and parser pure, reentrant, and thread-safe. Make the generated scanner use palloc() etc. instead of malloc() etc. For the bootstrap scanner and parser, reentrancy and memory management aren't that important, but we make this change here anyway so that all the scanners and parsers in the backend use a similar set of options and APIs. 2024-08-02Include bison header files into implementation filesPeter Eisentraut
Before Bison 3.4, the generated parser implementation files run afoul of -Wmissing-variable-declarations (in spite of commit ab61c40bfa2) because declarations for yylval and possibly yylloc are missing. The generated header files contain an extern declaration, but the implementation files don't include the header files. Since Bison 3.4, the generated implementation files automatically include the generated header files, so then it works. To make this work with older Bison versions as well, include the generated header file from the .y file. (With older Bison versions, the generated implementation file contains effectively a copy of the header file pasted in, so including the header file is redundant. This adds extern declarations for some global variables produced by Bison that are not already declared in its generated header file. This is a workaround to be able to add -Wmissing-variable-declarations to the global set of warning options in the near future. Another longer-term solution would be to convert these grammars to "pure" parsers in Bison, to avoid global variables altogether. Note that the core grammar is already pure, so this patch did not need to touch it. 2023-03-25Fix CREATE INDEX progress reporting for multi-level partitioning.Tom Lane
The "partitions_total" and "partitions_done" fields were updated as though the current level of partitioning was the only one. In multi-level cases, not only could partitions_total change over the course of the command, but partitions_done could go backwards or exceed the currently-reported partitions_total. Fix by setting partitions_total to the total number of direct and indirect children once at command start, and then just incrementing partitions_done at appropriate points. Invent a new progress monitoring function "pgstat_progress_incr_param" to simplify doing the latter. We can avoid adding cost for the former when doing CREATE INDEX, because ProcessUtility already enumerates the children and it's pretty easy to pass the count down to DefineIndex. In principle the same could be done in ALTER TABLE, but that's structurally difficult; for now, just eat the cost of an extra find_all_inheritors scan in that case. Since the retirement of some older buildfarm members, the oldest Bison that gets regular testing is 2.3. MacOS ships that version, and will continue doing so for the forseeable future because of Apple's policy regarding GPLv3. While Mac users could use a package manager to install a newer version, there is no compelling reason to force them do so at this time. 2022-07-06Change internal RelFileNode references to RelFileNumber or RelFileLocator.Robert Haas
We have been using the term RelFileNode to refer to either (1) the integer that is used to name the sequence of files for a certain relation within the directory set aside for that tablespace/database combination; or (2) that value plus the OIDs of the tablespace and database; or occasionally (3) the whole series of files created for a relation based on those values. Using the same name for more than one thing is confusing. Replace RelFileNode with RelFileNumber when we're talking about just the single number, i.e. (1) from above, and with RelFileLocator when we're talking about all the things that are needed to locate a relation's files on disk, i.e. (2) from above. In the places where we refer to (3) as a relfilenode, instead refer to "relation storage". Since there is a ton of SQL code in the world that knows about pg_class.relfilenode, don't change the name of that column, or of other SQL-facing things that derive their name from it. On the other hand, do adjust closely-related internal terminology. For example, the structure member names dbNode and spcNode appear to be derived from the fact that the structure itself was called RelFileNode, so change those to dbOid and spcOid. Likewise, various variables with names like rnode and relnode get renamed appropriately, according to how they're being used in context. Hopefully, this is clearer than before. It is also preparation for future patches that intend to widen the relfilenumber fields from its current width of 32 bits. Variables that store a relfilenumber are now declared as type RelFileNumber rather than type Oid; right now, these are the same, but that can now more easily be changed. 2022-01-17pg_upgrade: Preserve relfilenodes and tablespace OIDs.Robert Haas
Currently, database OIDs, relfilenodes, and tablespace OIDs can all change when a cluster is upgraded using pg_upgrade. It seems better to preserve them, because (1) it makes troubleshooting pg_upgrade easier, since you don't have to do a lot of work to match up files in the old and new clusters, (2) it allows 'rsync' to save bandwidth when used to re-sync a cluster after an upgrade, and (3) if we ever encrypt or sign blocks, we would likely want to use a nonce that depends on these values. This patch only arranges to preserve relfilenodes and tablespace OIDs. The task of preserving database OIDs is left for another patch, since it involves some complexities that don't exist in these cases. Database OIDs have a similar issue, but there are some tricky points in that case that do not apply to these cases, so that problem is left for another patch. 2020-10-04Make postgres.bki use the same literal-string syntax as postgresql.conf.Tom Lane
The BKI file's string quoting conventions were previously quite weird, perhaps as a result of repurposing a function built to scan single-quoted strings to scan double-quoted ones. Change to use the same rules as we use in GUC files, allowing some simplifications in genbki.pl and initdb.c. While at it, completely remove the backend's scanstr() function, which was essentially a duplicate of the string dequoting code in guc-file.l. Instead export that one (under a less generic name than it had) and let bootscanner.l use it. Now we can clarify that scansup.c exists only to support the main lexer. We could alternatively have removed GUC_scanstr, but this way seems better since the previous arrangement could mislead a reader into thinking that scanstr() had something to do with the main lexer's handling of string literals. Maybe it did once, but if so it was a long time ago. This patch does not bump catversion, since the initially-installed catalog contents don't change. Note however that successful initdb after applying this patch will require up-to-date postgres.bki as well as postgres and initdb executables. In passing, remove a bunch of very-long-obsolete #include's in bootparse.y and bootscanner.l. Until now, only selected bulk operations (e.g. COPY) did this. If a given relfilenode received both a WAL-skipping COPY and a WAL-logged operation (e.g. INSERT), recovery could lose tuples from the COPY. See src/backend/access/transam/README section "Skipping WAL for New RelFileNode" for the new coding rules. Maintainers of table access methods should examine that section. To maintain data durability, just before commit, we choose between an fsync of the relfilenode and copying its contents to WAL. A new GUC, wal_skip_threshold, guides that choice. If this change slows a workload that creates small, permanent relfilenodes under wal_level=minimal, try adjusting wal_skip_threshold. Users setting a timeout on COMMIT may need to adjust that timeout, and log_min_duration_statement analysis will reflect time consumption moving to COMMIT from commands like COPY. Internally, this requires a reliable determination of whether RollbackAndReleaseCurrentSubTransaction() would unlink a relation's current relfilenode. Introduce rd_firstRelfilenodeSubid. Amend the specification of rd_createSubid such that the field is zero when a new rel has an old rd_node. Make relcache.c retain entries for certain dropped relations until end of transaction. Bump XLOG_PAGE_MAGIC, since this introduces XLOG_GIST_ASSIGN_LSN. Future servers accept older WAL, so this bump is discretionary. Commit ca4103025dfe left a few loose ends. The most important one (broken pg_dump output) is already fixed by virtue of commit 3b23552ad8bb, but some things remained: * When ALTER TABLE rewrites tables, the indexes must remain in the tablespace they were originally in. This didn't work because index recreation during ALTER TABLE runs manufactured SQL (yuck), which runs afoul of default_tablespace in competition with the parent relation tablespace. To fix, reset default_tablespace to the empty string temporarily, and add the TABLESPACE clause as appropriate. * Setting a partitioned rel's tablespace to the database default is confusing; if it worked, it would direct the partitions to that tablespace regardless of default_tablespace. But in reality it does not work, and making it work is a larger project. Therefore, throw an error when this condition is detected, to alert the unwary. Add some docs and tests, too. 2019-03-06tableam: introduce table AM infrastructure.Andres Freund
This introduces the concept of table access methods, i.e. CREATE ACCESS METHOD ... TYPE TABLE and CREATE TABLE ... USING (storage-engine). No table access functionality is delegated to table AMs as of this commit, that'll be done in following commits. Subsequent commits will incrementally abstract table access functionality to be routed through table access methods. That change is too large to be reviewed & committed at once, so it'll be done incrementally. Docs will be updated at the end, as adding them incrementally would likely make them less coherent, and definitely is a lot more work, without a lot of benefit. Table access methods are specified similar to index access methods, i.e. pg_am.amhandler returns, as INTERNAL, a pointer to a struct with callbacks. In contrast to index AMs that struct needs to live as long as a backend, typically that's achieved by just returning a pointer to a constant struct. Psql's \d+ now displays a table's access method. That can be disabled with HIDE_TABLEAM=true, which is mainly useful so regression tests can be run against different AMs. It's quite possible that this behaviour still needs to be fine tuned. For now it's not allowed to set a table AM for a partitioned table, as we've not resolved how partitions would inherit that. Disallowing allows us to introduce, if we decide that's the way forward, such a behaviour without a compatibility break. Catversion bumped, to add the heap table AM and references to it. 2018-11-21Remove WITH OIDS support, change oid catalog column visibility.Andres Freund
Previously tables declared WITH OIDS, including a significant fraction of the catalog tables, stored the oid column not as a normal column, but as part of the tuple header. This special column was not shown by default, which was somewhat odd, as it's often (consider e.g. pg_class.oid) one of the more important parts of a row. Neither pg_dump nor COPY included the contents of the oid column by default. The fact that the oid column was not an ordinary column necessitated a significant amount of special case code to support oid columns. That already was painful for the existing, but upcoming work aiming to make table storage pluggable, would have required expanding and duplicating that "specialness" significantly. WITH OIDS has been deprecated since 2005 (commit ff02d0a05280e0). Remove it. Removing includes: - CREATE TABLE and ALTER TABLE syntax for declaring the table to be WITH OIDS has been removed (WITH (oids[ = true]) will error out) - pg_dump does not support dumping tables declared WITH OIDS and will issue a warning when dumping one (and ignore the oid column). - restoring an pg_dump archive with pg_restore will warn when restoring a table with oid contents (and ignore the oid column) - COPY will refuse to load binary dump that includes oids. - pg_upgrade will error out when encountering tables declared WITH OIDS, they have to be altered to remove the oid column first. - Functionality to access the oid of the last inserted row (like plpgsql's RESULT_OID, spi's SPI_lastoid, ...) has been removed. The syntax for declaring a table WITHOUT OIDS (or WITH (oids = false) for CREATE TABLE) is still supported. While that requires a bit of support code, it seems unnecessary to break applications / dumps that do not use oids, and are explicit about not using them. The biggest user of WITH OID columns was postgres' catalog. This commit changes all 'magic' oid columns to be columns that are normally declared and stored. To reduce unnecessary query breakage all the newly added columns are still named 'oid', even if a table's column naming scheme would indicate 'reloid' or such. This obviously requires adapting a lot code, mostly replacing oid access via HeapTupleGetOid() with access to the underlying Form_pg_*->oid column. The bootstrap process now assigns oids for all oid columns in genbki.pl that do not have an explicit value (starting at the largest oid previously used), only oids assigned later by oids will be above FirstBootstrapObjectId. As the oid column now is a normal column the special bootstrap syntax for oids has been removed. Oids are not automatically assigned during insertion anymore, all backend code explicitly assigns oids with GetNewOidWithIndex(). For the rare case that insertions into the catalog via SQL are called for the new pg_nextoid() function can be used (which only works on catalog tables). The fact that oid columns on system tables are now normal columns means that they will be included in the set of columns expanded by * (i.e. SELECT * FROM pg_class will now include the table's oid, previously it did not). It'd not technically be hard to hide oid column by default, but that'd mean confusing behavior would either have to be carried forward forever, or it'd cause breakage down the line. While it's not unlikely that further adjustments are needed, the scope/invasiveness of the patch makes it worthwhile to get merge this now. It's painful to maintain externally, too complicated to commit after the code code freeze, and a dependency of a number of other patches. Catversion bump, for obvious reasons. 2018-05-05Fix bootstrap parser so that its keywords are unreserved words.Tom Lane
Mark Dilger pointed out that the bootstrap parser does not allow any of its keywords to appear as column values unless they're quoted, and proposed dealing with that by quoting such values in genbki.pl. Looking closer, though, we also have that problem with respect to table, column, and type names appearing in the .bki file: the parser would fail if any of those matched any of its keywords. While so far there have been no conflicts (that I've heard of), this seems like a booby trap waiting to catch somebody. Rather than clutter genbki.pl with enough quoting logic to handle all that, let's make the bootstrap parser grow up a little bit and treat its keywords as unreserved. Experimentation shows that it's fairly easy to do so with the exception of _null_, which I don't have a big problem with keeping as a reserved word. The only change needed is that we can't have the "close" command take an optional table name: it has to either require or forbid the table name to avoid shift/reduce conflicts. genbki.pl has historically always included the table name, so I took that option. The implementation has bootscanner.l passing forward the string value of each keyword, in case bootparse.y needs that. This avoids needing to know the precise spelling of each keyword in bootparse.y, which is good because that's not always obvious from the token name. 2018-04-07Indexes with INCLUDE columns and their support in B-treeTeodor Sigaev
This patch introduces INCLUDE clause to index definition. This clause specifies a list of columns which will be included as a non-key part in the index. The INCLUDE columns exist solely to allow more queries to benefit from index-only scans. Also, such columns don't need to have appropriate operator classes. Expressions are not supported as INCLUDE columns since they cannot be used in index-only scans. Index access methods supporting INCLUDE are indicated by amcaninclude flag in IndexAmRoutine. For now, only B-tree indexes support INCLUDE clause. In B-tree indexes INCLUDE columns are truncated from pivot index tuples (tuples located in non-leaf pages and high keys). Therefore, B-tree indexes now might have variable number of attributes. This patch also provides generic facility to support that: pivot tuples contain number of their attributes in t_tid.ip_posid. Free 13th bit of t_info is used for indicating that. This facility will simplify further support of index suffix truncation. The changes of above are backward-compatible, pg_upgrade doesn't need special handling of B-tree indexes for that. Logical decoding should not publish anything about tables created as part of a heap rewrite during DDL. Those tables don't exist externally, so consumers of logical decoding cannot do anything sensible with that information. In ab28feae2bd3d4629bd73ae3548e671c57d785f0, we worked around this for built-in logical replication, but that was hack. This is a more proper fix: We mark such transient heaps using the new field pg_class.relwrite, linking to the original relation OID. By default, we ignore them in logical decoding before they get to the output plugin. Optionally, a plugin can register their interest in getting such changes, if they handle DDL specially, in which case the new field will help them get information about the actual table. If we restrict unique constraints on partitioned tables so that they must always include the partition key, then our standard approach to unique indexes already works --- each unique key is forced to exist within a single partition, so enforcing the unique restriction in each index individually is enough to have it enforced globally. When CREATE INDEX is run on a partitioned table, create catalog entries for an index on the partitioned table (which is just a placeholder since the table proper has no data of its own), and recurse to create actual indexes on the existing partitions; create them in future partitions also. As a convenience gadget, if the new index definition matches some existing index in partitions, these are picked up and used instead of creating new ones. Whichever way these indexes come about, they become attached to the index on the parent table and are dropped alongside it, and cannot be dropped on isolation unless they are detached first. To support pg_dump'ing these indexes, add commands CREATE INDEX ON ONLY <table> (which creates the index on the parent partitioned table, without recursing) and ALTER INDEX ATTACH PARTITION (which is used after the indexes have been created individually on each partition, to attach them to the parent index). These reconstruct prior database state exactly. If we allow this, whatever outer command has the table open will not know about the new index and may fail to update it as needed, as shown in a report from Laurenz Albe. We already had such a prohibition in place for ALTER TABLE, but the CREATE INDEX syntax missed the check. Fixing it requires an API change for DefineIndex(), which conceivably would break third-party extensions if we were to back-patch it. Given how long this problem has existed without being noticed, fixing it in the back branches doesn't seem worth that risk. AFAICT, the only actual benefit of closing a bootstrap transaction is to reclaim transient memory. We can do that a lot more cheaply by just doing a MemoryContextReset on a suitable context. The StrategyNumber typedef now lives there, as well as existing strategy numbers for B-trees (from skey.h) and R-tree-and-friends (from gist.h). skey.h is forced to include stratnum.h because of the StrategyNumber typedef, but gist.h is not; extensions that currently rely on gist.h for rtree strategy numbers might need to add a new A few .c files can stop including skey.h and/or gist.h, which is a nice side benefit. The changed routines are mostly those that can be directly called by ProcessUtilitySlow; the intention is to make the affected object information more precise, in support for future event trigger changes. Originally it was envisioned that the OID of the affected object would be enough, and in most cases that is correct, but upon actually implementing the event trigger changes it turned out that ObjectAddress is more widely useful. Additionally, some command execution routines grew an output argument that's an object address which provides further info about the executed command. To wit: * for ALTER DOMAIN / ADD CONSTRAINT, it corresponds to the address of the new constraint * for ALTER OBJECT / SET SCHEMA, it corresponds to the address of the schema that originally contained the object. * for ALTER EXTENSION {ADD, DROP} OBJECT, it corresponds to the address of the object added to or dropped from the extension. transformExpr() has for many years had provisions to do nothing when applied to an already-transformed expression tree. However, this was always ugly and of dubious reliability, so we'd be much better off without it. The primary historical reason for it was that gram.y sometimes returned multiple links to the same subexpression, which is no longer true as of my BETWEEN fixes. We'd also grown some lazy hacks in CREATE TABLE LIKE (failing to distinguish between raw and already-transformed index specifications) and one or two other places. This patch removes the need for and support for re-transforming already transformed expressions. The index case is dealt with by adding a flag to struct IndexStmt to indicate that it's already been transformed; which has some benefit anyway in that tablecmds.c can now Assert that transformation has happened rather than just assuming. The other main reason was some rather sloppy code for array type coercion, which can be fixed (and its performance improved too) by refactoring. I did leave transformJoinUsingClause() still constructing expressions containing untransformed operator nodes being applied to Vars, so that transformExpr() still has to allow Var inputs. But that's a much narrower, and safer, special case than before, since Vars will never appear in a raw parse tree, and they don't have any substructure to worry about. In passing fix some oversights in the patch that added CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS (missing processing of IndexStmt.if_not_exists). These appear relatively harmless, but still sloppy coding practice.

Bootstrap determines whether a column is null based on simple builtin rules. Those work surprisingly well, but nonetheless a few existing columns aren't set correctly. Additionally there is at least one patch sent to hackers where forcing the nullness of a column would be helpful. The boostrap format has gained FORCE [NOT] NULL for this, which will be emitted by genbki.pl when BKI_FORCE_(NOT_)?NULL is specified for a column in a catalog header. This reverts commit 45b7abe59e9485657ac9380f35d2d917dd0da25b. It turns out that the %name-prefix syntax without "=" does not work at all in pre-2.4 Bison. We are not prepared to make such a large jump in minimum required Bison version just to suppress a warning message in a version hardly any developers are using yet. When 3.0 gets more popular, we'll figure out a way to deal with this. In the meantime, BISONFLAGS=-Wno-deprecated is recommendable for anyone using 3.0 who doesn't want to see the warning.

Per report from Vik Fearing; analysis by Peter Eisentraut. Back-patch to all active branches, since somebody might try to build a back branch with up-to-date tools.

If the name lookups come to different conclusions due to concurrent activity, we might perform some parts of the DDL on a different table than other parts. At least in the case of CREATE INDEX, this can be used to cause the permissions checks to be performed against a different table than the index creation, allowing for a privilege escalation attack. This changes the calling convention for DefineIndex, CreateTrigger, transformIndexStmt, transformAlterTableStmt, CheckIndexCompatible (in 9.2 and newer), and AlterTable (in 9.1 and older). In addition, CheckRelationOwnership is removed in 9.2 and newer and the calling convention is changed in older branches. A field has also been added to the Constraint node (FkConstraint in 8.4). This reverts commit a475c6036752c26dca538632b68fd2cc592976b7. Erik Rijkers reported back in January 2013 that after the patch, if you do "pg_dump -t myschema.mytable" to dump a single table, and restore that in a database where myschema does not exist, the table is silently created in pg_catalog instead. That is because pg_dump uses "SET search_path=myschema, pg_catalog" to set schema the table is created in. While allow_system_table_mods is not a very elegant solution to this, we can't leave it as it is, so for now, revert it back to the way it was previously.
