Simply by renaming README to README.md we get nice markdown formatting on GH.

On top of that, here go a few improvements; the diff looks huge, but you'll see I've changed only headings, indentation, formatting and added useful hyperlinks (the copy itself has not changed, except for one or two typos I've fixed along the way).

The maintainer of this repo told me privately that they don't approve these changes, so closing it.
