SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR POETRY ONLINE
Submissions for written, visual, & cine poetry are open.
Formatting and Submission Types
General Style: Poetry Online (also styled as poetry.onl) does not adhere to a strict style or thematic constraint.
Written Poetry: Submit 1 to 5 poems in a single file. Acceptable file formats are .doc, .docx, or .pdf. There are no restrictions on line or page count.
Visual and Cine Poetry: Submissions in this category can be in .png, .jpg, .mp4, and .m4v formats. For guidance on what constitutes visual poetry, refer to "Visual Poetry Today" [links to external site] by the Poetry Foundation or ctrl + v journal [links to external site] for examples.
Experimental Writing: Submissions of experimental writing are encouraged.
Author Biography: Include a third-person biography, not exceeding 400 characters, in the designated field on Submittable. Do not include it in the document file.
Cover Letter Alternative: Optionally, include a brief note along with your biography in Submittable.
Book Reviews & Interview Pitches: These should be submitted via the site contact form as brief summaries or pitches.
Types of Poetry: Both unpublished and reprint submissions (previously published work) are accepted.
Submission Frequency: After submitting, wait for a response before sending another submission. Limit one no-fee submission per month. Multiple no-fee submissions will be returned unread.
Simultaneous and Translation Submissions: These are accepted in all categories.
Compensation and Rights
Payment: Poems accepted after 10/01/2022 will be compensated at $60 per poem, payable via Venmo (U.S. authors only) or PayPal (international authors only) upon publication.
Rights for Unpublished Poems: First North American Serial Rights (FNASR) are required.
Reprint Permissions: If accepted, permission for future reprinting in Poetry Online anthologies, in print or online, must be granted.
Logistics and Additional Information
Submission Period: Submissions are accepted year-round.
No-Fee Submissions Open Monthly: Each month, on a randomly selected date, we open submissions without a fee. These submissions close once we reach our cap of forty: we offer forty slots monthly for written, visual, and cine poetry, available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you do not see the no-fee option on our Submittable page, submissions have either closed or not yet opened.
Fee Waivers: Available upon request for those with financial need. Contact via the website's form for details.
