Nintendo Co., Ltd. (任天堂株式会社 Nintendō Kabushiki gaisha) is a Japanese multinational consumer electronics company headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. Nintendo is the world's largest video game company by revenue. Founded on 23 September 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi, it originally produced handmade hanafuda playing cards. By 1963, the company had tried several small niche businesses, such as cab services and love hotels.

Abandoning previous ventures in favor of toys in the 1960s, Nintendo then developed into a video game company in the 1970s, ultimately becoming one of the most influential in the industry and one of Japan's most valuable listed companies. Nintendo of America was also formerly the majority owner of the Seattle Mariners Major League Baseball team.

The name Nintendo can be roughly translated from Japanese to English as "leave luck to heaven." As of December 2024, Nintendo reports historically cumulative sales of over 883.77 million hardware units and 6.09 billion software units.[1]

Nintendo boasts numerous renowned franchises, with Super Mario standing as the most successful video game series in the world. It publishes and oversees the Splatoon series and controls the games' servers and DLC unlocks. Nintendo occasionally creates custom Splatoon servers accessible only by Nintendo employees for live streams or promotional material. For example, a custom Regular Battle (Turf War) server with only the Moray Towers stage (unavailable to the public at that time) was created for the Nintendo Treehouse: Live with Splatoon Tower Control live stream. Nintendo frequently does informational live streams through its Nintendo Direct service.

On 11 July 2015, Nintendo's fourth president, Satoru Iwata, died of a tumor inside of his bile duct, having been fighting this ailment for over two years.[2] On 14 September 2015, Nintendo announced Tatsumi Kimishima to be the new president of Nintendo Co., replacing Satoru Iwata.[3]
