X Battle is a multiplayer mode in Splatoon 3. It was originally announced as one of two battle modes to be added in free post-launch updates (along with League Battle) and launched on 1 December 2022 as part of the Chill Season 2022 update.[1]

Description

X Battles are similar to X Rank in Splatoon 2's Ranked Battles and use many of the same mechanics, such as X Power. However, while Splatoon 2 featured rank progression from S+ to X within the Ranked Battle game mode, Splatoon 3 offers X Battle as a separate mode from Anarchy Battles. In X Battle, players have season-long (three-month) sessions to play matches against other skilled players to increase their X Power. There are five placement matches at the beginning of the season to determine the starting X Power. After placement, players take on a series of matches which end after three wins or losses, with X Power points being gained or lost at the end depending on the outcome.[2] Players in the top 500 are also recognized. As of version 6.0.0, players who have an X Power above 2000 only play against other players with an X Power above 2000 in X Battles. In version 11.1.0, this restriction no longer applies to the Tentatek Division.

X Battles are separated into two divisions, each sponsored by a gear brand:[3][4]

  • Takoroka Takoroka Division covers players from Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand
  • Tentatek Tentatek Division covers players from North America, South America, and Europe

Players choose their division the first time they play X Battles in a given season, and are unable to change the division until the next season.[2]

As of version 6.0.0, the X power changes work according to the following table.

X Power (Before) Minimum range of X Power changes
0 wins, 3 losses 1 win, 3 losses 2 wins, 3 losses 3 wins, 2 losses 3 wins, 1 loss 3 wins, 0 losses
Less than 2500.0 -75.0 -50.0 -25.0 +25.0 +50.0 +75.0
2500.0 to 3000.0 -45.0 -30.0 -15.0 +15.0 +30.0 +45.0
3000.0 or higher -20.0 -15.0 -10.0 +10.0 +15.0 +20.0

Ranks

To play X Battles, one must have a rank in Anarchy Battle of S+0 or higher. Players need to keep this in mind with the rank reset mechanic. If a player wants to play X Battles at the beginning of the new season, they must have an Anarchy Battle Rank of S+10 or higher before the old season ends, since all ranks S+10 and above are reset to S+0 each season, while S+9 and lower are reset below the S+0 threshold. In version 8.0.0, an alternate condition was added for players who reach rank 1,000 or better on the X Battle leaderboards in any mode, granting them an Anarchy Battle rank of S+0 for the next season and maintaining their access to X Battles, regardless of the Anarchy Battle rank with which they ended the previous season. The condition was changed in version 9.2.0 to rank 3,000 or higher.

Unlike Anarchy Battle, which has a single rank for all ranked game modes, X Battle features separate rankings for each of them. X Power is tracked separately for Splat Zones, Tower Control, Rainmaker, and Clam Blitz.

List of modes

Mode Description Games

Splat Zones
Plays similarly to the King of the Hill mode from other video games. It revolves around a central "zone" or "zones", which players must attempt to cover in ink. Whoever controls the zone for the most amount of time by the end of the match wins.

Tower Control
A player must take control of the tower located in the center of a map and ride it towards the goal in the enemy base, stopping at multiple checkpoints along the way. The team that gets the tower furthest into their enemy's base by the end of the match wins.

Rainmaker
A player must grab and take the Rainmaker weapon to a pedestal near the enemy team's spawn point, stopping at a checkpoint along the way. The team that carries the Rainmaker furthest towards their respective pedestal by the end of the match wins.

Clam Blitz
Players pick up clams scattered around the stage and try to score as many points as they can by throwing their clams in the goal at the enemy's base. The team that scores the most points by the end of the match wins.

Call signs

Main article: Call sign

Call signs were added in the version 10.0.0 update. Each name is based on the player's gear or hairstyle and appears during matches in X Battle instead of the actual nicknames. The results screen shows the call signs for each player and their in-game name after waiting a few seconds.

Quotes

Don't forget about X Battles, coming in a future update! Not only do you have to reach an elite rank to join an X Battle but you'll have to risk X Power as you fight your way up the leaderboard. Our Tactical Research team is still investigating the details - stay tuned for more.

X Battles are coming in #Splatoon3's Chill Season 2022! Players ranked S+0 or higher can get in on some action that is decidedly not chill. You'll need to join one of two divisions sponsored by local gear brands. Europe and the Americas play in the Tentatek Division.

Trivia

  • With the post-launch addition of X Battle joining Anarchy Battle (Series) and Anarchy Battle (Open), Splatoon 3 achieved a first for the series by making three different ranked rotations available simultaneously to solo players.
