Sawako is a sound sculptor, a timeline-based artist and a signal alchemist who understands the value of dynamics and the power of silence. Once through the processor named Sawako, subtle fragments in everyday life float in space vividly with a digital yet organic texture. She weaves the poetic soundscape to connect and fuse dream and awake, urban and nature, real and virtual.
Sawako released her albums from 12k (USA), and/OAR (USA), Schole (Japan), BASKARU (France) and Anticipate Recordings (USA). She had collaborated or improvised with Taylor Deupree, HYPO, Ryan Francesconi, Toshimaru Nakamura, Andrew Deutsch, Kenneth Kirschner, Daisuke Miyatani, Kyoka, AOKI Hayato, ARAKI Shin, Haruka Nakamura, Ryuichi Sakamoto among others.
Her tracks were used “Treelines” the documentary by Patagonia Film and “GEEK GIRLS” the documentary by Gina Hara, and she creates the playlist based on the theme of Earth Day for Aesop. Also, she did sound design for the art works of Brian Alfred and Kosei Komatsu as well as for the fashion shows of Support Surface.Her unique sonic world has been called “post romantic sound” by Boston’s Weekly Dig.
She has performed internationally as an audio and/or visual artist in MUTEK (Canada): Warm Up at P.S.1, Armory Show, Diapason, Le Poisson Rouge, Tonic, Diapason, Monkey Town, Issue Project Room, Roulette, World Financial Center Winter Garden, Starbucks Salon, BAP Festival (NYC); Corcoran Gallery (Washington DC); UCLA Hammer Museum (LA); OFFF Festival (Lisbon); MACBA, CosmoCaixa, Sonar Festival (Spain); Glade Festival, Resonance FM, ICA (UK); Batofar (Paris); m12(Berlin); Offsite, Super Delux, Bullets, gift_lab, Vacant, Apple Store (Japan).

Sawako obtained a Master’s degree in Interactive Telecommunications from ITP New York University where she studied Networked Expression, Algorithmic Composition, Physical Computing, Ambient Information, Post Linear Narrative and Audio/Visual Studies. She received a B.A. from Environmental Information Department at Keio University, SFC, Japan. Since 2019, she is the part-time teacher of Ferris University, Yokohama Japan, where she teaches Media Art and Computer Music for women.
Born in Nagoya, Japan, studying the classical piano and Japanese Nohgaku Theatre when she was a child.

名古屋出身、東京とニューヨークに６年ずつ在住後、ノマディックに活躍中の音響作家、メディアアーティスト。sound sculptor、signal alchemist。デジタル技術を用いながらオーガニックで瑞々しい世界感を紡ぐsawakoの作品は、これまで英国のWire誌や米国のNYArt誌などにとりあげられてきた。日常の小さな断片をきりとって、フィールドレコーディングや電子音が織りなす、様々な情景のうつろう懐かしくて少し切ない凛とした空気感を紡ぐ。親しみやすい穏やかな音景によって「microsound」「lawercase sound」とよばれていたジャンルの裾野を広げることに貢献する一方、その硬派でゆるぎない独特の世界感とテクノロジーに関する洞察力の深さは、世界中のコアなリスナーに根強く支持されつづけている。
これまでに、12k、and/OAR、BASKARU、Anticipate Recordingsから通算５枚のソロアルバムを、scholeからdaisuke miyataniとのコラボレーション作品をリリース。Taylor Deupree、Andrew Deutsch、Kenneth Kirschner、中村としまる、Daisuke Miyatani、青木隼人、Kyoka、o.blaat、Amephone、HYPO、Ryan Francesconi、ARAKI Shin、内田輝、haruka nakamura、kynd、小松宏誠などと即興演奏やコラボレーションを行ってきた。2011年、スペインのSONARフェスティバルでプラネタリウムのための音と映像作品を制作。2012年、GwaGwaのインスタレーション東京ミッドタウン５周年記念アート「いつつのゆびわ」の六本木アートナイト演出を担当し、音と光で作品を彩った。2014年元旦、NHK FMラジオ「坂本龍一ニューイヤー・スペシャル」に坂本龍一氏とのセッションとトークで出演。2014年3月、表参道CAYにて大平貴之氏のMEGASTARプラネタリウムと共に浮遊感あふれるパフォーマンスを行った。2016年から８シーズン連続で、ファッションブランドsupport surfaceのファッションショーのサウンドデザインを担当。

米国の人気リアリティショー「America’s Next Top Model」やアウトドアメーカーArcteryxとGORE-TEX® のプロモ映像、Patagonia社製作の木についてのドキュメンタリー「Treelines」、カナダのドキュメンタリー映画「GEEK GIRLS」などに楽曲が使用され、2021年のアースデイにはAesopのためにプレイリストを制作。NYCのギャラリーHaunch of Venisonで展示されたBrian Alfredのアニメーション作品「It’s Already The End of The World」などのサウンドデザインも手がけてきた。また、これまで 「Listening through the Noise : The Aesthetics of Experimental Electronic Music」 (Oxford University Press) 、「Handmade Electronic Music ―手作り電子回路から生まれる音と音楽」（Nicolas Collins著・オライリージャパン） 、「Transmission Arts : Artists and Airwaves” (PAJ Pablications) 」などの本の中で作品について紹介されてきた。
音の領域だけにとどまらず、デジタルアーティストとして、シグナルスケープ、サウンドスケープ、アンビエントインフォメーション、時空間と軌跡、日常の中のささやかな物語などをテーマに活動。2016年ごろからは、古の叡智や周波数・身体・拡張現実・非線形についてリサーチを進める。World Forum of Acoustic Ecology（オーストラリア）、バークレー音楽院（ボストン）、文化学園大学（東京）、Programmable Media II: Networked_Music（ペース大学、NYC）等でアーティストトークも行い、2009年にはフロリダのDolphin Research Centerでイルカの認知に関するサマーコースを受けるためJerome FoundationからGrantを獲得。

幼少時に金春流能楽とクラシックピアノを習い、慶応義塾大学環境情報学部卒業、New York University Interactive Telecommunication Programで修士号。2015年6月より、表参道COMMUNEにある「個を立たせて状況をつくっていく人が育つ学びの場」自由大学にて「DIYミュージック」の教授を担当。2019年4月より、フェリス女学院大学音楽芸術学部非常勤講師。それぞれが自分の持ち味を生かして輝けるクリエイティブな未来を創り出している。

また、これまでにTaylor Deupree、OVAL、David Toop、Mark Mcguire、Vashti Bunyan、Holly Herndon、Carsten Nicolai、Olaf Bender、Gareth Dickson、Mijk van Dijk、Yan Novak、Ulises Conti、Henning Schmiedtなどの通訳や、映像・ファッション・IT・VR・現代アート・日本文化・ライセンス契約・インターネットカルチャーなどの分野で翻訳や通訳を手掛けてきた。特に、電子音楽やテクノロジーに関する豊富な知識と、アーティストとしての現場経験を生かしたわかりやすい通訳には定評がある。
