A Story of Strength and Survival: Meet Fredy For six years, pain had been stealing Fredy's joy. The 62-year-old retired kindergarten teacher from rural Guatemala loved dancing with his wife. He loved gathering with family. But severe knee pain had slowly taken it all away. On their fixed income, surgery felt impossible, a dream too expensive to even consider. Then hope arrived at a nearby hospital. A surgical mission team, equipped with high-quality sutures donated by MAP, was offering free operations. Fredy didn't hesitate. And in the skilled hands of volunteer surgeons using MAP-provided supplies, his knee was repaired. "The surgery went beautifully," said Jessica Pelkowski, the team's nurse practitioner. Fredy went home the very next day, not to a life of limitation, but to anticipation. To movement. To dancing with his wife again. Because Fredy was given access to safe surgical care, his retirement is now filled with joy instead of pain. Hope instead of hopelessness. This is what access to medicine makes possible.
