I want to congratulate the State of Colorado and Kelly Swartzendruber for gaining FDA approval to import lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada for sale in Colorado. They have worked hard to develop a program for retail pharmacies in Colorado to pay lower wholesale prices on several patented drugs that can achieve substantial savings. https://lnkd.in/gn5PAtbQ Naysayers will focus on remaining obstacles to Canadian wholesale drug importation programs, namely lack of cooperation from the drug manufacturers, but also Canada's concerns about maintaining supplies. The longer-term answer is expanding wholesale importation access to the European Union. This is another step in the right direction both for Colorado and the cause of lower drug prices generally through safe importation. Colorado is helping to further demonstrate that importing lower-priced drugs from high-income countries with rational safeguards in place is safe. There's a lot more work to be done to make prescription drug importation work for America. According to an AARP Policy, Research, and Thought Leadership analysis, prices for the top brand-name drugs in the U.S. have increased an average of 81% since they entered the market. Meanwhile, prices for those same medications in other high-income countries have decreased an average of 13%. Brand medicine prices don't just start higher in the U.S. They keep climbing. This AARP Public Policy Institute analysis shows prices for the top brand-name drugs in the U.S. increased an average of 81% after initial market entry, whereas in other high-income countries, prices for those same drugs fell an average of 13%. For patients, those differences can translate into substantial savings when purchasing through properly verified international pharmacies. Leucovorin has not been approved to treat autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by any regulatory authority anywhere in the world, yet a US FDA announcement spurred confusion, an uptick in off-label use, and thereby shortages of this critical chemotherapy rescue therapy. Patients and caregivers should know: - There is very limited evidence supporting leucovorin to treat ASD, and the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend its routine use in such treatment. - Ultimately, in March 2026, the FDA approved leucovorin for treating cerebral folate transport deficiency but not for treating ASD. - Per PharmacyChecker International Pharmacy Verification Program Standards, a valid prescription is required to purchase medicine at international online pharmacies. A word about importation: Due to shortages in the United States, the FDA is allowing “unapproved” commercial importation of Lederle Leucovorin (calcium folinate tablets) marketed by Pfizer in Canada. The Canadian product is manufactured by Pfizer's contract manufacturer, Farmasierra, in Madrid, Spain. Here’s how Merck priced out cancer patients worldwide. For its Cancer Calculus project, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) tracked and verified Keytruda's global patent thicket. Our team provided the starting dataset of 184 U.S. Keytruda patent applications from our public database, The Drug Patent Book. The ICIJ data team reviewed each application, then expanded its search to uncover 1,212 Keytruda patent applications worldwide. The ICIJ’s findings mirror what our U.S. data and investigations have shown: Merck exploits patent systems and capitalizes on a lack of transparency to build patent thickets that extend its monopoly over Keytruda and its dominance over patients who need it. https://lnkd.in/edfB2m57
