💻🏡 Just because you’ve gone remote doesn’t mean your carbon footprint is zero. Remote working has become a core part of how many small businesses operate. It can significantly reduce emissions from commuting and office energy use – but home heating, air conditioning and electricity use for office equipment all contribute to an SME’s carbon emissions. Read our new action guide on reducing emissions through remote work: https://bit.ly/4au1H29 Thank you to our partner Giki for collaborating on this new guide!

Why are businesses going quiet on #climate? I’ve been asked this question a lot recently – and it’s the question many were asking business leaders in Davos. We are certainly not in the same place we were a few years ago but, in my view, this is a period of evolution not retreat. This is how we currently see things at We Mean Business Coalition: 1️⃣ Saying companies are going quiet can be self-reinforcing. Execs will wonder why they should do something others aren’t - and it doesn’t represent the whole truth. The responsible policy engagement team, Jenny Stanley and Dominic Gogol, has worked with InfluenceMap to platform examples of where companies are speaking up and the benefits of doing so. Our work with Corporate Leaders Groups Europe and other partners has shown the key role business advocacy has played in developing domestic climate plans and targets. 2️⃣ Remember that the voice of business is trusted. Governments and their voters need to hear from employees at all levels and in companies of all sizes about the benefits of action, to build support for the transition to modern, #CleanEnergy economies. #SMEs play an important role as the backbone of local communities and economies – a new SME Climate Hub policy advocacy action guide will help more of them speak up. 3️⃣ In a complicated geopolitical context companies may be more comfortable - in some countries - sharing their stories behind closed doors, sending private letters or speaking up publicly as part of large activations only. As we embark on a year focussed on implementation, the Coalition is mapping out now where the business voice is most strategic, how we can bring companies together – and the increasingly important role of trade groups and associations. 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐌𝐄 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡 At the Scope 3 Peer Group strategy days last week, we heard from some of the most pioneering procurement teams in the world on sustainability challenges—from pharma to food to electronics and more. (thanks Oliver Hurrey for a fantastic few days) ⭐One recurring question: how do you engage the long tail of your supply chain on carbon reduction? Many of the successes are impressive. Schneider Electric has cut supply chain emissions by over 50% between 2020-25, with many SMEs in their supply chain. Thanks to teams Equipoise and SME Climate Hub for a great workshop on SME supplier decarbonisation. I had a quick cameo presenting back findings from an excellent working group, led by Accenture Team, Gemma Baker 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫: SMEs don't follow linear paths. While large companies typically progress through predictable sustainability stages, smaller businesses operate differently. One of the most common things we hear at Giki Actions from SMEs is "we're different because..." That phrase tells you why flexibility matters. As a result, assessing supplier maturity needs to be modular, not linear. Different businesses face different constraints, opportunities, starting points and pathways. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬: ☑️Request decision-useful data from suppliers, not just standardized metrics that may not fit their operations ☑️Assess SME maturity through multiple lenses rather than a single linear scale ☑️Focus on practical support that is additive for SMEs, rather than burdensome ☑️Recognize that the long tail of your supply chain needs different tools than your strategic suppliers The good news? There is great support already there for SMEs from Giki Actions for SME decarbonisation; Luke Abbott Patrick Stirling and the Equipoise team for excellent measurement tools and training and Pamela Jouven and Daniel Altman and team SME Climate Hub for a huge range of excellent tools that help SMEs across the globe. #supplychain #scope3emissions #sustainability #procurement

#Scope3 isn't a solo sport. 🤝 I’m heading home from the Scope 3 Strategy Days in London feeling more convinced than ever that #SME engagement is the frontier of climate strategy in 2026. It was a privilege to take the stage with Luke Abbott and Patrick Stirling of Equipoise, Nancy Gillis Gillis at Scope 3 Peer Group, and Gemma Baker at Accenture to tackle one of the toughest nuts to crack: Low-maturity and SME supplier engagement. We know that for most large corporations, their #Scope3 is an SME’s Scope 1 and 2. That’s why we can’t reach net zero without bringing small and medium businesses with us – they are the backbone of the global economy, after all. My key takeaway? Engaging SMEs isn't just about sending a survey; it’s about providing the tools, templates, and radical collaboration needed to turn ambition into action. With over 300 peers working in the trenches together this week, the momentum for 2026 is undeniable. We’re all facing the same bottlenecks—and the solutions are already in the room. Now, let’s take those templates and turn them into 1.5°C-aligned reality. 🌍 Daniel Altman Liz Posner Mark Foyle Lizzie Knight

A question I'm hearing more often from business leaders in India is: “How do we start engaging MSME suppliers on Scope 3—without adding cost or complexity?” If you’re a large manufacturing business operating in India and you are: 🔹 Preparing for Scope 3 emissions disclosures (or planning ahead for 2026) 🔹 Working with a large MSME supplier base that would benefit from practical climate awareness and training 🔹 Looking to collect emissions data from MSME suppliers without expensive software or consultant-heavy approaches I can help. At the SME Climate Hub, we’re in the middle of a supply-chain engagement programme designed to help large companies work with MSME suppliers on climate action—using free, MSME-friendly tools that are credible, practical and scalable. We’re currently looking to partner with 1–2 forward-looking corporates to pilot this programme in India. 📩 If this resonates, feel free to DM me and let’s explore whether this could work for your organisation. #Scope3 #SupplyChainSustainability #ManufacturingIndia #SustainabilityLeadership #MSMEs #ClimateAction #NetZero #ResponsibleBusiness

Sustainability is no longer a 'nice to have'—it’s the blueprint for the next generation of successful businesses. Take Brazil-based Papel Semente for example. They aren’t just making stationary and packaging. By transforming waste into "seed paper" that can be planted after use, they’ve proven that sustainable innovation isn’t just good for the planet—it’s a competitive advantage. Check out the full story below👇
Businesses of all sizes are seizing the benefits of climate action. Now. Papel Semente are one of those companies. They recognise the value of investing in renewable power, transitioning operations away from fossil fuels, and sending a powerful signal that the future is electric. It's not just good for the planet, it’s good for their competitiveness and resilience too. As Andréa Carvalho says "Start. We don't need to wait for the perfect plan. The key is to start now, with what we have today." The SME Climate Hub provides small businesses around the world with tools and guidance to start their journey. In #Davos this week, the world’s most influential leaders gather to discuss the future of our planet. But if we want to move the needle on climate action, we need to make sure the voices of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are heard loud and clear. SMEs make up 90% of business globally. They are the backbone of our economies and the heart of our communities. Without them, the transition to #netzero simply isn’t possible. In our latest op-ed for edie with Vanessa Erogbogbo of International Trade Centre, Pamela Jouven argues that it’s time to "pass the mic" to small businesses. We don’t just need high-level commitments; we need practical support, streamlined reporting, and inclusive policy-making that empowers SMEs to lead the green revolution. Small businesses are ready to take action. It’s time to give them the seat at the table they deserve. #SMEClimateHub #Davos2026 #WEF #ClimateAction

Our recent open letter to governments was written in partnership with organizations like B Lab and the We Mean Business Coalition. Together we are asking for governments to recognize four key priorities: 🟩ensuring policy frameworks increase SME engagement around climate action 🟩promoting the business case for SME climate action 🟩establishing a streamlined pathway and centralised guidance for climate action and resilience planning 🟩mobilizing accessible green finance for SMEs Learn more about our asks in edie: https://lnkd.in/ehdrYWYT
