WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute physicians Justin McCloskey, MD, neuroradiology, and P. David Adelson, MD, neurosurgery, recently participated in the Pediatric International Consensus Conference on Intracranial Clinical Neuromonitoring (P-ICONIC) in Rome, contributing to the development of international guidelines for multimodal, non-invasive intracranial monitoring in pediatric traumatic brain injury patients. This global collaboration will help inform future clinical studies and advance care for children with traumatic brain injury and other acute neurological conditions. Today marks an important milestone in expanding access to high-quality healthcare across our region. WVU Health System and Independence Health System have signed a definitive agreement that will lead to Independence Health System joining WVU Medicine, with the transaction expected to close in late September or early October pending remaining regulatory approvals. As part of this partnership, WVU Health System has committed to an unprecedented $800 million investment in Independence Health System’s hospitals, supporting facility enhancements, advanced technology, expanded clinical capabilities, and a new electronic medical record system. Together, we are strengthening the future of healthcare in southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond by investing in people, programs, infrastructure, and innovation while preserving access to care close to home. This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. 🚨 A global first in pancreatic cancer treatment is happening at the WVU Cancer Institute. 💙 We are proud to partner with Continuity Biosciences on a first-in-human Phase I clinical trial evaluating an innovative implant designed to deliver chemotherapy directly to pancreatic tumors using low-voltage electric pulses — bringing new hope to patients facing one of the most challenging cancers to treat. 🔬 Led by Brian Boone, this groundbreaking study reflects our commitment to advancing cancer care through innovation, research, and compassionate patient care. 🌎 As one of the first sites in the world to offer this technology, the WVU Cancer Institute continues building the future of cancer treatment for patients in West Virginia and beyond. From heart failure to a second chance ❤️ After a severe heart attack, Tom developed advanced heart failure and began care at WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital, PA. As his condition progressed, he was transferred to the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute in Morgantown, WV, where he received a Left Ventricular Assist Device (#LVAD). “At that point, I was committed. I wanted to get better,” Tom shared. After his surgery, Tom continued to receive compassionate care and began cardiac rehab at WVU Medicine. WVU Medicine is advancing respiratory care through the launch of a new Comprehensive Obstructive Lung Disease and Asthma Program at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. Designed to improve outcomes for patients living with asthma and COPD, the program brings together specialized clinical care, advanced diagnostic tools, biologic therapies, telemedicine, patient navigation, and clinical research opportunities in one coordinated model. By shifting from reactive treatment to proactive disease management, the program aims to help patients breathe easier, reduce hospitalizations, and improve quality of life — while also expanding access to care across West Virginia.
