𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 by The World Bank Studies of the #development of #cleanhydrogen have often focused on the #production side. Infrastructure built and used for #storage and #transportation warrants more attention. Among the topics that should be assessed are #systemdesign, #operation, #integration, and #ownership; #marketdesign and #governance; and #planning. This Live Wire examines #casestudies and #literature on the #infrastructure for #hydrogenhubs, with an emphasis on the #benefits of #sharedinfrastructure. Given the breadth of hydrogen production and infrastructure, the focus is on #renewablehydrogen production for #domestic #use and for #export after conversion to ammonia. Global #investment related to hydrogen #infrastructure could amount to between $1.5 and $5 trillion between now and 2050 (Hydrogen Council 2022; Palladino 2023; ESMAP - Energy Sector Management Assistance Program et al. 2024).

Hydrogen’s story has moved from theory to implementation — but scaling it to commercial levels is proving the hardest step. High electrolyzer costs, long permitting timelines, and limited transport infrastructure remain the biggest challenges. Europe’s hydrogen grid, for instance, is running up to 3 years behind schedule. Yet, these same constraints create opportunity: companies solving logistics and cost curves could define the next phase of the clean-energy economy. What do you think — where’s the real bottleneck: tech, infrastructure, or policy? Information only; not investment advice. #Hydrogen #CleanEnergy #EnergyTransition #Innovation #Investing #FutureEnergy

The EU’s latest energy update puts #hydrogen at the center of its 2050 #netzero strategy. While many sectors can electrify, industries like steel, cement, aviation and shipping need alternative solutions. Hydrogen offers a viable path to #decarbonize these hard-to-abate areas, driving innovation, competitiveness and sustainable jobs. 📊 The paper highlights that EU hydrogen demand targets risk falling short. 2030 quotas may unlock only ~25% of the anticipated demand. ⚖️ Competitiveness remains a concern: CBAM addresses carbon leakage, but not renewable hydrogen obligations, creating uneven conditions for EU industry. 🚀 Early movers in steel, fertilisers, and methanol show progress, yet scaling requires coordinated demand-side measures beyond one-off projects. 🏷️ Carbon footprint labelling for finished products could be a powerful tool (if designed flexibly and uniformly) to avoid greenwashing and enable transparency. 💶 Demand incentives and procurement obligations are critical to distribute the “green premium” fairly, ensuring uptake of low-carbon products across value chains. 🏗️ Strategic use of public procurement (particularly in steel, fertilisers, and transport) can accelerate market creation and de-risk private investments. 🔑 The upcoming Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act offers a chance: shift from fragmented supply policies to systemic Green Lead Markets for hydrogen. 🌍 Done well, this approach could align climate ambition with industrial resilience, supporting Europe’s leadership in clean technologies. #Hydrogen #Decarbonisation #EnergyTransition #GreenIndustry #EUClimatePolicy
