Ng Reviews -- A Rant From Ron 2010-11-10 14:27:53

Newgrounds reviews have reached a new level of stupidity this year. I have played flashes that had every review a one-liner, some reviews talking to each other, and ALL of them giving a 10 score.

Don't you see where this goes wrong? There's no feedback to the flash author. If all you say is "Lol this flash was so funnyi peed my pants XDDDDD" then you're doing nothing to contribute to the improvement of the author.

And what do you get? Flashes loaded with 9.7 averages, 9.9 average scores. Newgrounds reviews have essentially become a YouTube comment section. Quite a few '10 accounts have nothing but 10 scoring reviews. Reviews are actually quoting others, such as "@XxGodDamnxX I agree with everything he said so I won't write anything else." This has long since been a virtual taboo on NG. Only this year have I seen it used multiple times.

What is the point of this rant? I just needed to get it off my chest. Come on, guys, you can do better. Add another line to the review. Don't call a flash "perfect," like I've seen some stupid reviews do. Think for yourself. Watch the flash another time before you review. Don't be a sheep and think for yourself when you write a review.

Most of the people I gripe about will probably never see this, either.
I've gone out of my way to improve my review quality. It was my top priority after improving my BBS posting quality. It's not that hard.

TLDR: Don't turn our review system into the YouTube comment section. Please.

Most newcomers are used to the aspect of a comment system below submissions. So they naturally assume that by "reviews" that NG just means comments, and they write accordingly.

Well, maybe its because we've got stuffs that generally cater to 10 year olds: Hentai and violent games (Road of the Dead comes to mind).

Nothing against afore mentioned stuffs, but if you have stuff that will attract 10 year olds, then your site becomes infested with them.

I wholeheartedly agree, though I don't usually post reviews, simply because I'm terrible at it.

That said, I believe there once was a thread in the wi/ht forum, where you could report such reviews (sometimes even users themselves) for the statwhores to mark. I believe it worked quite well, but I don't know whether it's still being used.

That said, I believe anything a deity rank whistle marks, immediatly gets mod's attention. Do you mark them?

The few times I've reviewed this year, I always treat it like an actual critical review of the work in question (which I feel bad for when I find a word missing or a severe misspelling). You're generalizing.

Although that might be right, it's been like this for years on end, what's the reason it's different now?

Possibly because games/pornz have become more realistic, with the development of flash, the gore can become more detailed, and so can the porn.

Just a guess, cause I seriously have no clue.

Yeah, Rage's Thread for Abusive Reviews. I contributed to that while it was still open. To my understanding, it was locked because people were posting review links that were not abusive and people in the thread were blindly flagging anything. They ended up with broken whistles and complained.

There's a huge difference between stupid reviews and abusive reviews. Marking a review that isn't abusive ends with you losing whistle points. With great whistle power comes responsibility.

That would be a solution. If you were to make it so one-liners were specifically against the rules, then you'd have only helpful, or at least long, reviews on the site. You'd be able to flag inadaquate reviews.

That would take all the fun out of writing reviews though.

In your opinion, it does, however, some people like to help an author get better at what they're doing. Simply writing "Great flash, had a laugh! XD" will make the author feel better, but he won't know what he could improve on. Although I do agree a lot of authors do deserve the praise, a review in which you praise the author can also consist of more than "Was great, make more :)". The least a reviewer could do is explain which aspects of the flash he enjoyed. As such, the author will not only feel better and hopefully continue to upload great content, but he will also know what it is his fans like, meaning he can use that in further flashes.

If you want to have fun writing a review, it doesn't mean you can't be constructive.

I used to null many hentais, porns etc and all fucking belugerin games which are all with nearly no exception a bad copy of age of war.

Nearly all of my reviews got deleted due low rating. Now i dont review anymore, just give 0/5 to any new flash game to fucking lower the average score of stupid games.

Maybe we should have review mods, people who could maybe send a pm to the user, saying that this is a comment box, it's a review, and tell them what sort of things they should think about doing.

And yes, when I first came here, I gave one word reviews, over 100. But my latest ones, even though I don't review anymore, are much higher in quality.

Maybe things will just get better

Personally I think we should scratch the whole 'Review' idea. At least, make it more of a 'Comments' thing. Because really if I want to praise a good flash then I should be able to, and do anyway - But like it shouldn't be frowned upon by super serious reviewers if I just want to say "Wow, this flash is perfect. Can't wait for more".

I'm pretty sure flash artists will appreciate this none the less and maybe even work harder on their future projects for their fans, because they got the feedback from people who loved what they did.

I don't doubt that it's like this throughout most of NG, but Egoraptor is an exception because he draws in just the kind of people who you'd think would give bad reviews.

Hm..

Maybe, if it wouldn't be too complex, we could have a system that allows both reviews and comments. Meaning the user can decide wether he just wants to leave a quick remark or some praise, or wether he would like to take the flash apart piece by piece and criticise every inch of it.

The reviews would be moderated on quality, whereas the comments would just be monitored on abusive behaviour.

This way, the artist can either:
- Check the comments section to feel super happy fun times.
- Check the reviews section, so he can improve himself.

I think this would make it easier for the artists as well as the viewers, making the comments section less of a serious deal and making the reviews actually worth reading, instead of having to plow through hoardes of "Nice game, I liked it." to ultimately find a review with some critisism in it.

Quick note: I noticed someone said you can switch the order of reviews from helpful -> useless, but we both know there are people amongst us who take every bit of criticism as an insult and will as such, vote down a bunch of great reviews down whilst upping simple comments.

It's 10 year old's that are mentioned in this thread that put me off Newgrounds as a whole for a very long time. I've finally joined, but I avoid those stupid flash animations where sex is mentioned every few seconds and there are loads of reviews going "DERP HERP THAT WUZ SO FUNNY LOLZZZ".

I completely agree with this thread, and it's people like you guys who gave me a different outlook on this site altogether.

This is such a bullshit argument.. I mean, your last submission has a score of 4.35 and loads of 9's and 10's even though it's just a sliderbar with the b/p ranks..

Meanwhile, submissions actually worth while like There she is!! step 2 are getting scores only 0.02 point higher and equal reviews. So first off: don't try to be an elitist ass and secondly: don't stick your head in the dirt, it's obvious that reviews aren't getting any better.

Yeah i know i was just saying, i actually make good reviews and do the exact opposite of what he's saying people are doing in their reviews blah blah blah, but i am too noticing the rise in people saying "herp derp i agree with everything the guy below me said herp derp"
