Essential improvements
Skip intro videos
Game loads too quickly, skipping story elements
Wait a few seconds before proceeding through a loading screen
Modern SSDs will load each new section instantly, before the dialog even has a chance to appear. It appears the developers did not account for the game loading to be this fast. If you are in a loading screen and you see an image in the loading screen, wait a few seconds as there may be narration during the loading screen that you may wish to experience that would be skipped by pressing space as soon as you are given the chance.

Frametime issues on high refresh rate VRR Monitors
Set your refresh rate below 200hz
This game has a frame limiter of 200fps. If your monitor's refresh rate hits or exceeds this number, you will have bad frame pacing, causing flickering on Variable refresh rate setups (particularly OLED). By setting the refresh rate to 180hz for example, this problem mostly goes away.

- Download and install Flawless Widescreen.
- Download the Metro 2033 FWS Plugin.
- Unzip the archive into FWS installation folder.
- Launch FWS, select Metro 2033 from Installed Plugins section, adjust world FOV and hands FOV to your preference.
Notes
- This fix can also be used to fine tune the in-game sensitivity, however it can take some fine tuning to be what the user wants. It is suggested that the user uses this website to find their preferred sensitivity.[citation needed]
- Off by default.
Resolution Issues
Some users have encountered issues such as not being able to set their native resolution; the game resetting their chosen resolution to a lower one; or the game's maximum available resolution being lower than their monitor's native resolution.[6] Such cases may be caused by the presence of multiple monitors attached to the computer, or attempting to play the game on an attached TV where larger resolutions may not be available. Possible solutions include unplugging any extra monitors[7] or setting the multi-monitor display mode in Windows to "Computer Only".
If the game won't show your native resolution and you are playing on a 4K TV with HDR, you will have to turn off HDR on the TV (turning off HDR in Windows won't work), and then the game will allow you to select a higher resolution from the in-game options.
Disable motion blur
- Choosing High or Very High graphics preset automatically enables motion blur, and there is no separate option to disable it.
Modify configuration file
- Config option is only respected in DX9 mode.
- Go to
<Steam-folder>\userdata\<user-id>\43110\remote.
- Open
user.cfg with a text editor.
- Change
sick_mblur 0 to sick_mblur 1.
- Save the file.
- In the game video options switch DirectX mode to DX9.
Manually patch game executable
- Completely disables motion blur in DX10/DX11 mode.
- Steam users need to unpack the executable using Steamless before patching.
- Open
<path-to-game>/metro2033.exe in a hex editor app (e.g. HxD).
- Search for the hex string
00 0F 84 B8 02 00 00 and replace it with 00 E9 B9 02 00 00 90.
- Save and close the edited file.

VR support
Issues fixed
Depository glitched (High frame rate issues)
- High frame rate may create a collision bug that makes it impossible to enter the hole in the wall in depository level
Limit the Framerate to 60 FPS[11]
- Set max frame rate to 60 FPS in the video driver control panel or other software limiters.
Crash on startup
Install dependencies[12]
- Go to
<path-to-game>\install.
- Run the installers located there and try installing/launching again.
- If the problem still persists and refers to a missing
PhysXLoader.dll, install the latest NVIDIA PhysX System Software and manually copy the files from C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\PhysX\Common to the <path-to-game> folder.[13]
- If you keep seeing
nvcuda.dll related errors in the Event viewer (Windows Logs > Applications), copy the nvcuda.dll from C:\Windows\system32 into the <path-to-game>. If that doesn't help, try an older version of nvcuda.dll (such as 6.14.13.142 which can be found on ddl-files.com).
Notes
- It may be necessary to uninstall PhysX before reinstalling.
- There may also be stray copies of
PhysXLoader.dll in folders such as c:\windows\sysWow64\.
Change game's language in Steam properties tab[14]
- Depending on the region where the game was purchased, Steam account owners are granted access to different depots containing files specific to that region. If a user selects a game language in the Steam properties tab that is not part of the regional release they have activated, the Steam client will not download all the files needed to run the game.
Delete user.cfg[citation needed]
- Occasionally the game will not relaunch, especially on Windows 10. Faulting module name: MSVCR80.dll in the Event viewer (Windows Logs > Applications).
- Go to
%LOCALAPPDATA%\4A Games\Metro 2033.
- Delete
user.cfg.
Disable Lucid Virtu MVP control panel[citation needed]
If you're running Lucid Virtu MVP, you will need to disable the control panel entirely, not just uncheck Metro 2033 from the application list.
Correct Windows date and time settings[15]
Crash during Depot level
Don't crouch while your companion is being dragged off the cart[16]
Game crash after level loading
Restart the chapter[citation needed]
Vertical black bar lines appear
Disable Advanced DOF in DirectX 11 Options
Switch from DirectX 11 to 9[17]
Low FPS fix
Eliminate demanding commands by renaming <path-to-game>\user.cfg[18]
- Go to
<path-to-game>.
- Rename the
user.cfg file to user.txt.
- Go to
%LOCALAPPDATA%\4A Games\Metro 2033\.
- Delete the
user.cfg.
- Run the game to allow it to regenerate the
user.cfg file in %LOCALAPPDATA%\4A Games\Metro 2033\.
- Open the new
user.cfg file in %LOCALAPPDATA%\4A Games\Metro 2033\ and copy over all the commands from user.txt that start with bind (they're usually at the beginning of the file).
- Save the file.
Set priority to High or Realtime in Task Manager[citation needed]
- Setting can be saved with Process Lasso.
- A priority of Realtime can cause audio glitches.
Set Max pre-rendered frames between 1-4 (Nvidia) or FlipQueueSize between 1-3 (AMD)[citation needed]
Might not be selectable in the builtin control panels on newer driver versions from either manufacturer. For Nvidia, this can be worked around by using Nvidia Profile Inspector. For AMD, open Regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\UMD, create a new binary value called FlipQueueSize with a (hex) value of 3x 00, with x being a value between 1-3.

Deactivate second monitor[citation needed]
Mouse sensitivity issues
- The game applies different sensitivities for vertical and horizontal movement. It also has sensitivity settings that are too high for some players who prefer slower movement. (Although some people may still find the sensitivity too high)
Use DInputWrapper[19]
Install DInputWrapper.
- You must place both the dinput8.dll and one of the sensitivity files in your installation folder. Ensure that you rename the sensitivity file to
sensitivity.txt
Hotkeys don't work when the game is in focus
- The game initializes keyboard input in exclusive mode, preventing hotkeys (such as media control keys and Print Screen) from working. Applications running in background are also unable to read key presses.
Manually patch game executable[20]
- Steam users need to unpack the executable using Steamless before patching.
- Open
<path-to-game>/metro2033.exe in a hex editor app (e.g. HxD).
- Search for the hex string
3C 08 95 00 F6 D9 1B.
- Replace
1B with 31.
- Save and close the edited file.
Toggle aim down sights
Create AutoHotkey script
- Download AutoHotkey
- Copy the code to the clipboard (CTRL+C).
- Open AutoHotkey, go to File>Edit script, paste the code in Notepad.
- Change
Fallout4 to Metro 2033 in the Notepad, save.
- Reload Script in AutoHotkey.
