Blending Modes in Motion Graphics MA2241

The document discusses blending modes in After Effects, which allow combining multiple layers and footage in new ways. It explains that blending modes alter the color values of layers and can be used to reveal more or less of underlying layers by changing opacity. Various blending modes are described including darkening modes like Darken and Multiply, lightening modes like Add and Screen, and lighting modes that intensify contrast and saturation like Overlay and Pin Light. Students are assigned homework using blending modes to blend a person into a new background and include a quote about that person.

) sound in afx BLENDING MODES Blending modes are for you to combine multiple images (footage) together and create something totally new. The simple explanation of modes is that a mode alters the color value of the layer it is applied to. You can modify the mode by changing opacity values to reveal more or less of a layer. 1. To open the Modes column in the Timeline window you need to switch from "switches" to "Modes" 2. Simply click on the Switches/Modes text on the bottom. (F4)

3. 4. When you click on the Mode setting next to your layer, under the Mode column you get a range of possibilities

5. 6. Main blending Modes: a.) Darkening Modes: 1

-Darken: Exp.: Import from the week_5_source folder the image called GI_discovery_graph.jpg and HD_guitar.mov. Put the jpg on top of the film in the Timeline window and select the Darken mode on the jpg. You probably have to scale up the film because it is smaller than the image. Make sure your comp setting is not longer than the quicktime! Preview to see the results.

-Multiply: Import DV_pulse.mov. Delete the jpg layer and place this movie on top of the quitar film. Scale to adjust size. Select Multiply on DV_pulse.mov and preview again. Cooooooooooool. -Linear Burn and -Color Burn is in this combo. b.) Lightening Modes: Import the movie GI_Chrome.mov and place it on top of the HD_Guitar.mov. Try the following Modes: -Add -Lighten -Screen -Linear and Color Dodge C.) Lighting Modes: These Modes create artificial lights over the composition. They intensify the contrast and saturation. Add the following modes on the top layer: -Overlay -Soft, Hard, Linear, Vivid, and Pin Light -Hard Mix d.) Subtraction Mode: These modes subtract the color value of one layer from the layer underneath. Basically the previous Lighting Modes applied on the bottom layer. e.) Property Replacing Modes:

Obviously these modes replace attributes to assets, they take one particular property from the upper layer and uses it in place of the same property for the layers below: -Hue -Saturation -Color -Luminosity HOME WORK: CHOOSE A PERSON FROM THE THINK DIFFERENT MOVIE. USE A JUMPBACK TO BLEND IT IN THE NEW BACKGROUND. RESEARCH THIS PERSON AND TYPE UP A FAMOUS QUOTE USING AN ANIMATED TEXT PRESET! FOR NEXT WEEK BRING MORE PICTURES TO CREATE A MONTAGE.
