Impact of Oxidation on Fuel Quality

Oxidation reactions in diesel fuel during storage and combustion can negatively impact fuel quality by increasing acid value and decreasing cetane number, and can cause corrosion of fuel system components as well as issues with rubber and moving parts. Oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in diesel fuel has been extensively studied and leaves the fuel more susceptible to degradation.

deposits within the injection system and the combustion chamber.

These changes can compromise fuel quality with respect to effects on kinematic viscosity (v), acid value (AV) and cetane number (CN) (Du Plessis et al., 1985; Bondioli et al., 1995; Thompson et al., 1998; Monyem and van Gerpen, 2001; Dunn, 2008), while increases in peroxide value (PV) generally depends on the presence of oxygen (Dunn, 2002). The increased acidity and increased peroxide value as a result of oxidation reactions can also cause the corrosion of fuel system components, hardening of rubber components and fusion of moving components (Tang et al., 2008). Oxidation of fatty compounds has been discussed extensively in the literature. Unsaturation in the fatty acid chain is the structural
