Multiplication:

Multiply by hundreds and thousands

Multiplying numbers by hundreds or thousands

What happens
For examples:
Whenwe
when wemultiply
multiply
2a X
number
a 10
number byby
= 20 tens,
we add
X 10a =zero
20 hundreds orat the

endthousands?
200 of the=number.
X 10 2000
When we multiply a number by 100, we add
two zeroes (00) at the end of the number.

2 X 100 = 200

5 X 100 = 500

9 X 100 = 900

12 X 100 = 1200
Try out this question: X 2=18
91800

9 X 200 = 1800
How to multiply by hundreds:
1. Move the decimal point two places to the left.
For example: 9 x200 would become 9 x 2
2. Do the multiplication (9 x 2 = 18)
3. Move the decimal point of the product two places to the
right (= 1800)

GROUP COMPETITIONS
When we multiply a number by 1000, we add
three zeroes (000) at the end of the number.

3 X 1 000 = 3 000

6 X 2 000 = 12 000

8 X 3 000 = 24 000
More interactive GAMES….

• Ghost Blasters
• Division Bingo
• Multiplication Table: Cloud-click game
The end of the lesson…
Allocation of time

• Settle down = 10 min

• Explain = 5 min
• 24 students / 6 group= 4 students
• 1 group = 5min
• 5 x 6 = 30 min
