Science reflection
Science is the study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and
observations. The Next Generation Science Standards has three dimensions for third grade, they
are: disciplinary core ideas, scientific and engineering practices, and cross-cutting concepts. The
NGSS content is focused on preparing students for college and careers. In the third grade
students learn about molecules to organism, their structure and process. In order to teach about
molecules and organisms I need to know how to describe the unique and diverse life cycles of an
organism. I would also have to teach the students about the common birth, growth, reproduction,
and death of an organism. Also, third graders learn about biological evolution which has to do
with fossils, plants, animals, and organisms. To teach about evolution I need to know the right
terminology to use with the students. Another part of science that third graders are taught is the
Earth system. The earth system is about climate and weather students have to record patterns of
the weather and make predictions about it.
Throughout my college education I have taken science classes. In Biology class I learned
about the reproduction of plants and animals. Also, I went over the DNA structure and the RNA
structure. In biology I also learned more about the animal and plant cell. In Earth science I
learned about the earths climate and weather system. Also, I learned about planets, asteroids,
constellations, volcanoes, rocks and minerals. I learned about plate tectonics and earthquakes.
Biology and Earth science will help me teach elementary science because it covers most of the
topics that elementary students should be learning.

As a feature teacher I need to be well prepared to teach elementary science. I am prepared


to teach about planets, constellations, plate tectonics, earthquakes, weather and climate. I am
prepared to teach about the Earths weather and climate to third graders. I also feel prepared to
teach fourth graders about plate tectonics and earthquakes. In order to be an effective teacher I
need to learn the science vocabulary. In addition, I need to review every subject of science for
each grade in elementary. If I know what each grade learns in the science subject I will be better
prepare to teach the subject.
In my portfolio I will share my earth science planet project. The planet project will show
my understanding of the sizes of the planets. I will also share a power point about constellations
that I did with a group along with a work sheet. The power point is part of a lesson plan I had to
teach with a group to my Earth science class. Also I have an essay about a mineral that I will
share in my weebly page.
