Types of Electrical Insulators Explained

1. There are five main types of electrical insulators - pin, post, strain, suspension, and shackle. Each type is suited for different voltage applications. 2. Pin insulators are mounted on cross-arms and are used for overhead power lines up to 33kV. Post insulators are similar to pin but are used for higher voltages in substations up to 1100kV. 3. Strain insulators are horizontally suspended and used where transmission lines experience high tensile loads. Suspension insulators are the most common for voltages over 33kV, using multiple discs connected in a string.

Electrical Insulator Types

1- Pin Type
Pin type is mounted on a pin on the cross-arm of pole. This type of
insulator is used for overhead transmission and distribution of electric
power at voltages up to 33kV. Its made of porcelain or glass. Pin type
could be one part or two parts but at the end its only consist of one
piece (as shown in figure 1). For 11 kV one part is used and for 33 kV two
parts pin insulator are used. We can use this type of insulator beyond
33kv, but that becomes bulky in size & costly.

2- Post Type
This type is made of one piece of porcelain similar to pin insulator.
Unlike Pin insulator, this type is suitable for higher voltage application.
The post type usually used in high voltage substation (as shown in figure
2). This type of insulator can be mounted on supporting structure
horizontally as well as vertically. This type can be used at voltages up to
1100 kV if its stacked.

3- Strain type
Strain type insulators (shown in figure 3) are simply horizontally
suspended suspension insulators. This type used when there is a dead
end or there is a sharp corner in transmission line, the line has to sustain
a great tensile load of conductor or strain. The discs of this type are used
in the vertical plane. Voltage rating for this type is above 33 kV. Voltage
rating of strain insulator can be adjusted by adjusting number of discs.

4- Suspension type
This type is used to transmit beyond 33kV. This type is the most
commonly used in high voltage transmission. In suspension type
insulator numbers of insulators are connected in series to form a string
(as shown in figure 4) and the conductor is suspended at the bottom end
of this string while the other end of the string is secured to the cross-arm
of the tower. Each insulator of a suspension string is called disc. Voltage
rating of suspension type also can be adjusted by adjusting number of
discs.

5- Shackle type
Shackle types (shown in figure 5) is used low voltage distribution
system. Its used on sharp curves, end poles and in section poles. Its
single, round porcelain parts that are mounted horizontally or vertically.
They can be directly fixed to the pole with a bolt or to the cross arm.
