These are intellectual giants like the Hima layan Mountains and all others in the world are pigmies before them. The why of this may not be known to us, but the facts are there. Works, therefore, from the brains of the Maharishis stand unrivalled and they are coldssal in naturey Maharishi Jaimint ts a great intellect and his sutras are very valuable I make no apology to troduce them to the public in the simplest, English garb. The sutras will and have to speak for themselves They are more than five thousand years old and valuable to command attention and respect from all classes of readets, Indian or Foreign Thoce which have stood bniliantly for 5 or 10 fhongand years old without losing their briluancy are real intellectual gem “which everybody should covet to possess These five thousand years instexd of diminishing their Jostre, have added farther brill ancy to the sutras. The commentators have done ivaluble service and all their extensive interpretations and clear argu- ments, caunot be incorporated or embodied in short notes of mine If they are to be assimilated Into the real explana tions of the sutras, the balk of the present volume would increase by ten fold and cause tremendous discouragement to the students who would like to pursue the easiest way, and learn something of Jasmin sutras, which have been sealed letters to the Puglish knowing public Even the great Sans. knit scholars fiod the sufras hard nuts to crack and often they give them up for want of patiencer devotion and tech nical difficulties in the way, Ihavebeen only a student in Astrology and kundreS sciesces, although I hava hed 55 years of study and practice. Astrology is grand ocean, contain: JAIMINISUTRAS sng four hundred thousand stanzas or verses, and require. certainly centuries for its grasp and comprehension. After all our brains can take in only a few stanzas from the exten- sive literoture, but for brilliant intellects, a knowledge of the few fundamental principles, will enable them to grasp the sciences and make good progress in the course of a few years Ihave done my best in this Enghsh Translation, and I Jeave the readera to yudge of my horest labours in Fropornding sutraie pricciples. Within my humble know- Jedge none of our learned echo'ars seem to have taken the trouble, or made attempts to translate these aphorisms of Maharish: Jaimini and I am proud to say I am the firet in the field of translation to have undertaken this difficult task. Constructive criticrems are always welcome and I shall be grateful tothem who offer such observations. Destructive criticisms must be treated with supreme contempt. One who 1s not an adept in a subject will be s sorry eritic. He can be teft alone. INTRODUCTION An Introduction to the valuable Jaiminisutras will bs an uncalled for luxury The profundity ard brevity of these sutras have called forth the highest admiration from all readers duting the last fifty centuries My pen is too bumble to do them justice or bring their majasty before the pubhe in that dignified foem im which the ort, taal sutras stand in Sanskrit They eloquently speak for their :ntriunsic value. To frame short sutras with comprehensive mean- ipgs 1s not given to ordinary mortals Maharishis of Araya vartha alone have framed sutras. None else could da them No one bas done them sn the world Jt requires uot only the command over the Sauskrit Janguage but it also requires consummate scholarship in the Science of Astrology and kindred subjects ta frame sutras The readers should partr cularly remember that /yoté:sha in Sanskrit means hight and the cense which sees and feels tha light It 1s the clear vision of the Vedas Of the Vedic shadangas this 1s the most important, Without the help of Jyotasha, Vedas would ba blind We want clear Isght over all our events, past, Present, and the most desirable future What other sciences can pretend or have pretended to do this service for mankind? From where and from what previous states of existence have we come? What will be our success and failures in the Pp esent state and where are we going to live after the separa. tion of Jeeva from the Deda or the Life from the physical atructure? What are our thoughts, deeds and aspirations 1 this :fe, and how far do we succeed 1 our aims and qn what manner cen we do so? Da the planets influence ug and are we directed under their command? If not, what have they to do with us? How do they exercise their influences over 05? and bow can we cocrestly calculate them and guide out INTRODUCTION TO JAIMINISUTRAS #2 destinies in their Inght, averting evils and enhancing good Who are the mest famous writers on Astrology, and what ate their pretentions’? Kama, we have already seen means3 Those p'sets which are in 10, 12and3 form an obstruction to the Argala mentioned in Sutra 5 Here pro bably the meaningi13 that the Argala influences, formed by planets mentioned in Sutra 5, good or bad, are them selvo3 modified or obstructed by the planetary positions mentioned in this Su‘ra = Thog> planets which are m the 5th and 9th or Tankonas counteract the imfluences of the Argala planet» asexplamed before It has been already stated that certata planets in certain hous» catoe Argala or obstruction and taose which tre im tne oth and 9th coun- teract these ArGala inflaences Coming to Sutra 8 if fewer planets or powerless or disabled planets cise obstruction in Sufr: 7 to tae Argals generated in St'ri 5, then taey will not affect the power of that Argala Hlere it means that the obstructive ‘rgala created nm Sutr? 7, unless the planets are stron, will not ba able to obstruct the Argala influetces cauced by pl netary positions mentioned in Sutra a Sutra 9 15 clear and ceeds no further explanation With reference to Ketou the order must be reversed (Sutra 10} The 9th from Kethu becomes Argala and the Eth 14 JAIMINISUTRAS from hrm becomes Pratiba dhaka or obstruction. Then follows a short but very difficult Sutra Brevity may be the soul of composition, but it will be the thorny path to the commentators and readers, with ordinary intelligence and education Re, ani Al Su. 27,—Nakhwachit. In some places or signs this does not apply. NOTES Here the brevity of the Sutra offers the greatest confu- sion, What are the places or sigas where these rules do not ' 28 JAIMINISUTRAS apply When a general principle 1s Intd down why ehould there be any exceptions. If we had nat excellent commenta tors, who were almost equal to the orginal authors and some of whom were even superior to therr ortginals, many of the Sanskrit Sciences would have been sealed letters and none of the modern scholars though briliant, have got that spiritual capacity and concentration of mind to enable them to go beyond the ecreens and find out the literary gems which were hidden in the deep mines of Sanskrit Literature, If the ancient authors have been held as great benefactors to the literary world, the commentators for those works, should be considered even as greater benefactors What would have been the use of the Vedas, if they had not been handled by the renowned two commentators Bhatta Bhaskara and Vidyaranya Sansktit Sciences a @ putin technital styles and sufras and unless the commentators are scholars of great genius and of equal capacity, the origimal works would have remained.almost and inaccessible unintelligible to the modern generation For in this swfra there are two words Na nega tive and Xvacdzt, at times or occasions We have no clue to when and bow these two words have tobe used or inter+ preted Gathering information from the ancient commentators this stfra signifies while the general rule 1s to count regularly in all odd signs and inthe reverse orderin the even signs, this rule does not apply to Vrishabha and Vrischika and to Kumbha and Simha. There are tno signs according to Jatmim which have twa lords instead of one granted by the rules of general astrology. Zastha means, La 3, Bha 4 = 34, reversed st becomes 43, divided by 12, we get a remainder of 7, and therefore the 7th house 1s meant by this sutra. The 7th from Lagna becomes Kanya Its Lord Budba oceupres the 6th Budbe house from atin Kunbba, The 6th from Kumbha is Kataka. Therefore for this horoscope the Upayada becomes Kataha according tothisswira Thus jin this herescope according to one Lagns Ray Kethu| Sam 108 JAIMINISUTRAS theory Upapada becomes Simha and according to the latter Upapada becomes Kataka.
