Lhave the' pleasure to present herewith the third and
tevised editon of the Enghsh Translation of SAIMINE
SUTRAS by my revered grandfather Jate Professor B. Surya
narain Raa.
Jatmini ts held in very great esteem throughout India
not only for his philosophical aphorisms but for his astrologr
¢al wiitings also-
dJAIMINISUTRAS as presented in these pages deals
with a system of astrology that has no parallel in the
existing methods The Sutras are hard nuts tocrack and
Professor Rao bas tried his atmost to explain the aphonsms
as clearly and convincingly as possible
Lhave not interfered with esther the translation of the
notes as given by Prof Reo for fear of affecting the sense,
I have however added my own remarks by way of annota
trons wherever I felf that an apborism or aphorisms required
further elucidation
Professor Rao 1s the only scholar in India to have
attempted an Enghsh Translation of Jaimim. Therefore
the cultured public should feel grateful to him for having
enabled them to have access to 2 system of astrological
Uterature which rs unique in its own way My own public.
cation STUDIES IN JAIMINI ASTROLOGY is under prepara-
tion and it deals wsth the Jaron! system in an exhaustive?
manner
The Translation herewith presented has been thoroughly
revised by me and it 1s hoped reacers will bo highly benefit
e2 by a careful study of his book,

Time of Completion of Translation of this
Work—\ short sketch of Prof, B S Rao’s lifePREFACE
The best Indian scrences, religion, philosophy, dramas
literature politics and epics are the productions of the
Maharishis. These are intellectual giants like the Hima
layan Mountains and all others in the world are pigmies
before them. The why of this may not be known to us, but
the facts are there. Works, therefore, from the brains of
the Maharishis stand unrivalled and they are coldssal in
naturey Maharishi Jaimint ts a great intellect and his sutras
are very valuable I make no apology to troduce them to
the public in the simplest, English garb. The sutras will and
have to speak for themselves They are more than five
thousand years old and valuable to command attention and
respect from all classes of readets, Indian or Foreign Thoce
which have stood bniliantly for 5 or 10 fhongand years old
without losing their briluancy are real intellectual gem “which
everybody should covet to possess These five thousand years
instexd of diminishing their Jostre, have added farther brill
ancy to the sutras. The commentators have done ivaluble
service and all their extensive interpretations and clear argu-
ments, caunot be incorporated or embodied in short notes of
mine If they are to be assimilated Into the real explana
tions of the sutras, the balk of the present volume would
increase by ten fold and cause tremendous discouragement to
the students who would like to pursue the easiest way, and
learn something of Jasmin sutras, which have been sealed
letters to the Puglish knowing public Even the great Sans.
knit scholars fiod the sufras hard nuts to crack and often
they give them up for want of patiencer devotion and tech
nical difficulties in the way, Ihavebeen only a student in
Astrology and kundreS sciesces, although I hava hed 55 years
of study and practice. Astrology is grand ocean, contain:JAIMINISUTRAS
sng four hundred thousand stanzas or verses, and require.
certainly centuries for its grasp and comprehension. After
all our brains can take in only a few stanzas from the exten-
sive literoture, but for brilliant intellects, a knowledge of the
few fundamental principles, will enable them to grasp the
sciences and make good progress in the course of a few
years Ihave done my best in this Enghsh Translation,
and I Jeave the readera to yudge of my horest labours in
Fropornding sutraie pricciples. Within my humble know-
Jedge none of our learned echo'ars seem to have taken the
trouble, or made attempts to translate these aphorisms of
Maharish: Jaimini and I am proud to say I am the firet in
the field of translation to have undertaken this difficult task.
Constructive criticrems are always welcome and I shall be
grateful tothem who offer such observations. Destructive
criticisms must be treated with supreme contempt. One who
1s not an adept in a subject will be s sorry eritic. He can be
teft alone.INTRODUCTION
An Introduction to the valuable Jaiminisutras will bs an
uncalled for luxury The profundity ard brevity of these
sutras have called forth the highest admiration from all
readers duting the last fifty centuries My pen is too
bumble to do them justice or bring their majasty before the
pubhe in that dignified foem im which the ort, taal sutras
stand in Sanskrit They eloquently speak for their :ntriunsic
value. To frame short sutras with comprehensive mean-
ipgs 1s not given to ordinary mortals Maharishis of Araya
vartha alone have framed sutras. None else could da them
No one bas done them sn the world Jt requires uot only the
command over the Sauskrit Janguage but it also requires
consummate scholarship in the Science of Astrology and
kindred subjects ta frame sutras The readers should partr
cularly remember that /yoté:sha in Sanskrit means hight and
the cense which sees and feels tha light It 1s the clear
vision of the Vedas Of the Vedic shadangas this 1s the most
important, Without the help of Jyotasha, Vedas would ba
blind We want clear Isght over all our events, past,
Present, and the most desirable future What other sciences
can pretend or have pretended to do this service for mankind?
From where and from what previous states of existence
have we come? What will be our success and failures in the
Pp esent state and where are we going to live after the separa.
tion of Jeeva from the Deda or the Life from the physical
atructure? What are our thoughts, deeds and aspirations 1
this :fe, and how far do we succeed 1 our aims and qn what
manner cen we do so? Da the planets influence ug and are
we directed under their command? If not, what have they to
do with us? How do they exercise their influences over 05?

destinies in their Inght, averting evils and enhancing good
Who are the mest famous writers on Astrology, and what
ate their pretentions’? Are there any other sciences which
can belp us tm these directions ?
All these and many more pertinent and relevent questions
are asked both by believers and non believers of this science
Such questions are no doubt very important and are to the
point Fam proud to say that almost alisuch relevent ar
itrelevent questions on Astrology and remedies prescribed
by Astrology and Dharmasastras, have been cleatly and
Convincingly answered by me in my Jntroduction to the Study
of Astrology in the Ligh' of Modern Serences The Introduction
extends over 78 pages of closely printed matter and I must
refer my readers to that for fuller deta:ls and informations

along with their applications to the practical side of horos

ofthe Maharshi may appear quite novel buta little prac

Principles current with the astrologers, will show that there
will be na difficulty and the predictions based on these

Argala fluences and obstructions and they must becarefully

There are two varieties of Argud shubha ot benefimal,
and pzp1—or malefi .
Dara contains two Satokrit le ters daantra Da ac
cordiag to T2 argz given abave, creates t> tra Sth letter in
that groap and hance ston], for th» fi,ura § 2 represents
the 2nd letter in the Fre irgi, 1nd hencs stands for the digit
2—thus we have by tx) word dua 82
Rerding tus by the above mithenatical Sutra in the
reverse order we get 28 There ate 12 signs or rasis and
waen 23 is diuusied by 12, we gt 4 as the remainder.
Therefore Dtra meaos tx fourth hou e, representing the
Argala from any desired significance or planet Now the
peularity isthts Dare im Sanskrit language means wife
and in general astrology, when we say Daraor Darastena,
we signify the 7th house from Lagna for a male horoscope.
But Dara 19 Jaumiai by the rules b= has lard down means

Bhay,1. By the let‘er interpretation process-—Dhz, 18
tho fourth in the Purargz ant stan ts thereforefor+ Gyain
Sanskrit is composed ef Gs, and Ya the letter underneath
the former Ga, ard in all compound or conjorned Jetters the
lover letter has to be taken irto account and not the upper,
Thus we have here }aanditis the first Setterin Jarargq
Zz10 JAIMINISUTRAS
and stands for 1, We have therefore 41 Reading in the
reverse order we get 14 and this divided by 12 will give us
atemainderof 2 Bhagya—2 Therefore the 2nd house or
Planet from any given Bhava ~ilso becomes an Argala planet
or obstruction Sula is composed of Ss¢ and La In the
Yavarga, Seo stants as tha fifth letter and representa 5 La
represents the 3rd Jetter in Yavarg. and therefore stands
for 3 We thus get the figure 53 But reading tn tne Fesetse
order we haye 35 Divided by 12 we geb a remainder of 11
and therefote Sula stands for 11 Those planets which are
in 4,2 and 11 from any Planet or Bhavi in question or
under consideration, become classified as Arga/a and obstruct
their influences,
Tn Sutra 6 if many evil planets more than two as the
plural is used, are found in Kami or 3rd house they alsa
then become Argala Kg stands 1s in Kavarga and Afa
stands as Sin the Pavarga Therefore we have 15 Reading
im the reverse order we get 51 D vide this by 12 and we
have the remamder 3 Therefore Kama stands for the 3rd
house Kamain Sanskrit means Cupid, passions, wife and
destres In the general astrological Iiterature Kaniz moans
the 7th house representing husband or wife as the horoscope
may belong to a female or a male human being But by the
interpretation by letters as directed by the author, tt means
the third Asitis stated here the plansts b.come drgala

the 3rd from the questroning plansts or Bhaya But suppose
there 1s only one evil planet tn the 3rd louse then hy umplt
cation st does nat become Argals for the planet or Bhava
Io Sutra 7, Repha meinsl0 Rain Yatarga stands for
Zarit is the second fetter from Ya and Pha 1s the second
letter in the Pavarga and therefore vepresents 2, puttingJAIMINISUTRAS 11

represents a cipher. We hwe only 9 Astas or digits and
the 10th shovsaze’o _Chashands as the 6th letter from
Tavargs and represents 6, patting together we have OS
Reading m the reverce orzer we have 69 Divided by 12
there will be no balance but the author ask» the readers to
take always the last balance and waen 6019 divided by
12 xt goes four times (43) and the last balance 1s 12 'There-~
fore Neecha stands for 12. Kama, we have already seen
means3 Those p'sets which are in 10, 12and3 form an
obstruction to the Argala mentioned in Sutra 5 Here pro
bably the meaningi13 that the Argala influences, formed
by planets mentioned in Sutra 5, good or bad, are them
selvo3 modified or obstructed by the planetary positions
mentioned in this Su‘ra = Thog> planets which are m the

Argala planet» asexplamed before It has been already
stated that certata planets in certain hous» catoe Argala

Coming to Sutra 8 if fewer planets or powerless or

of that Argala Hlere it means that the obstructive ‘rgala
