Windmill Propeller Design Challenge

The document provides instructions for an activity where student teams will design and build propellers for windmills powered by a stationary fan. Materials like foam, popsicle sticks, and paper will be used to construct the propellers. Teams will sketch a design, build their windmill, test it by placing it behind a tape line and measuring the voltage generated with a multimeter. The team that generates the highest voltage will earn the most points.

Windmill: Blades of Power!

POE Unit 1 – Energy & Power

PROBLEM CONTEXT
The goal for this activity is to create a propeller for a windmill. The windmill will be powered by a fan
placed in a fixed position. Teams will be able to place their windmill in any position behind a tape line to
achieve the maximum voltage. Propellers will be created on a test pin and moved to a testing pin to
meter their voltage output.

MATERIALS
 Foam Center Prop (1)  Foam Plates
 Popsicle Sticks  Foam Bowls
 Tongue Depressors  Paper Plates
 Skill Sticks  Masking Tape

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS
Ruler Stand, Wires, Generator, Multimeter
Desk Fan

PROCEDURE
Sketch a design first on your design sheet (5 minutes). You must have this design approved by the
instructor before construction may begin. Build your windmill propeller, perform a preliminary test, and
modify your design (20 minutes). Test the windmills with instructor present, measure voltage, and
determine the winners (10 minutes).
