THE MaRtIaN:
A Novel
Ill only admit to being a Trekkie to certain circles and clearly my librarian friends make the cut! And while I dont read widely in sci-, The Martian instantly caught my interest. Apollo 13 meets Castaway in this grippingly detailed, brilliantly ingenious man-vs-nature survival thriller. This debut novel is a page-turner to the very end, I alternated between cheering and holding my breath as each character, from our stranded astronaut to his shipmates and the ground crew on Earth, put together smart, heroic efforts to bring one of their own home alive. All told in an authentic voice, with plenty of laughs and irony to relieve the tension.
Erica
A chorus of voices from a small Irish town in the wake of Irelands recent economic boom, bubble and collapse. In each captivating chapter, the reader is introduced to a different person from the town. From Bobby, to Lily, to Vasya to Seanie and others, the reader is exposed to just enough of each person to understand how their own personal disillusionment and heartbreak connect them all together at this one particular moment in time. A stunning debut.

Colson Whitehead
A longtime neighborhood poker player, Colson Whitehead was given a $10,000 stake and an assignment from the online ESPN offshoot Grantland to see how far he could get in the World Series of Poker. But coming from the astonishing mind of Whitehead, the book is a brilliant, hilarious, weirdly profound, and ultimately moving portrayal of more than poker. Also the human condition.

Paul McCartney is now regarded as more cozy than controversial. Back in the 1970s, however, McCartney cut a very different gure. Doyles biography paints an illuminating picture of that time, from McCartneys personal crisis following the Beatles split to the rude awakening of his imprisonment for marijuana possession in Japan in 1980 and the shocking wake-up call of John Lennons murder.

1. Trim the stem end from the lemon and cut it into quarters. Scoop out the pulp and press it through a strainer into a medium-sized bowl to extract the juices; discard the pulp. Finely dice the preserved lemon rind and add it to the bowl along with the parsley, butter, dried fruit, pistachios, salt, and cinnamon.
2. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the couscous and cook according to the package instructions. Drain and add it to the bowl of fruits and nuts, stirring until the butter is melted and all the ingredients are well mixed. Season with black pepper and serve.
Every year in Menton, a city near Nice thats on the border of Italy, theres a festival celebrating the famed Menton lemons. Plump and irregularly shaped, theyre seasonally available in Paris markets, with their leaves still attached. They are prized by chefs and cooks for their intense lemony avor (without the harshness of commercial lemons), and their not-too-bitter pith, which makes them perfect for preserving. This nutty, lemony salad makes good use of preserved lemons, which you can easily buy or make yourself (see my website
[Link] for a recipe). I keep a jar on hand at all times. Their avor is incomparable, and a jar will last for months in your refrigerator. They add an assertive citrus avor to this dish made with pistachios and Israeli couscous. Israeli couscous are little pearls of pasta, elsewhere called pastina, which meanslittle pasta, and when toasted its known as fregola sarda. (Orzo is a good substitute for the Israeli couscous.) To change things around a bit, you can vary the dried fruit or swap in fresh mint or cilantro for the parsley. Another
nut, such as toasted hazelnuts or almonds or even pine nuts, could be used in place of the pistachios.
