PIDP 3250 _ Asg 3 Forum Summary
Introduction
I had never heard of Appreciative Inquiry before this assignment. As I researched and looked for
a concise explanation to post in my forum, I initially could only see how the theory applied to large
groups: businesses, companies, factories, and not-for-profits looking to improve certain aspects of the
organization. As I delved deeper, though, I noticed a cross over with positive psychology, and the value
of optimism on a personal level, that can transfer to a departmental or institutional level. The system of
Appreciative Inquiry allows participants to tell stories of successes and then shift the talents and skills
employed during those successes and apply them across to new innovations and ideas. This is a
strengths-based approach where the organization recognizes the value inherent in the employees or
group members, and wants to exploit those strengths, build on them, and have the entire organization
appreciate its accomplishments.

What is Appreciative Inquiry This thread presented a short video that explained the concept of
Appreciative Inquiry (AI). One respondent agreed with my postulation that AI lends itself well to a
corporate environment.
What Do You Think? This thread was intended to initiate discussion about how AI could be used in an
educational context; not only on a college and organizational level, but also in a one-on-one teacher to
student setting. One respondent agreed that using a positive approach when evaluating an activity after
completion helped her group of students to look forward with a focus on building on the successes of
the activity.
Spinning the World with Positive Questions This thread was aimed to encourage a discourse on
whether it is manipulative or forward thinking to ask questions in a manner that influences the
conversation by starting from a strengths (not deficits) standpoint. The four respondents agreed that
using a positive-psychology approach works well not only with students and their individual goal setting,
but also on a departmental level within the structure of the college institution.
Resources
A number of resources were presented during the short discussion.

Conclusion
Appreciative Inquiry was not a hot-button topic during my facilitation of a forum. It is generally agreed,
however, that the optimistic standpoint of AI can be applied to professional practice both in a teacher-
to-student capacity and on a higher administrative level within an educational institution.
