ABSTRACT

The research is entitled effect of absenteeism and academic performance in


students from Peruvian Universities a major problem that faced by schools as well as
the teachers. This research refers to effects of absenteeism on their grades.

The intent of this research is to inform a lot of parents and teachers what are the
possible effects of excessive absenteeism on their participation in class, particularly in
students also the effects on the school profile if the students frequently absent on the
class. The research study design used is a exploratory and non-experimental and the
instruments used is a structural self-report questionnaire which the participants of this
study is the student of Peru Universities. The respondent of this study is 8,203 students
of 34 public and private universities from 23 (92.8%) regions of Peru participated 4,173
women (50.8%) with an average age of 20 years old and 4,030 men (49.2%) with an
average age of 23 years old. The surveyed students belonged to business and
engineering schools undergraduate students. The result of this research is seventy
eight point eight percent (78.8%) students were absent from class. Students indicated
that absence was due to illness or indisposition (53%), financial issues (35.8%) and
taking care of their physical or mental health (34.6%). The average number of days
absenteeism per year for any of these reason was 44.89 days.

The conclusion mentioned of this study is the absenteeism is a not-good effect


on students especially on their grades or academic performances. It will affect in their
socialization with other students and lack of friends. The recommendation is to conduct
the school strategies to avoid absenteeism; like provide additional support system,
celebrate successes and create more positive culture. Those are strategies that can
students use to prevent excessive absenteeism.
