Activities to Develop

1. Pre-task: definition of Didactic of English

Step 1: Go to the forum Task 1 in the Collaborative Learning Environment and make your

contributions about the concept of the term Didactic of English. For that, post what you

think this field makes reference to, what it studies, and so on.

Answer: The didactic of English is that art of teaching methodology and theory communicative

approach. So it is the practical application too, and learning of the English. This art studies

everything related to bilingual teaching and learning, emotions, actions, analysis, cross- age

learning setting and the early foreign language learning in an easy form.

2. Cycle-task: Acronyms of ELT

Step 1: Check out in the Knowledge Environment the introduction of the book “The

Cambridge Guide to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages” (pp. 1-6), the

reference “EFL ESL Teaching Terminology” and the Glossary for the course and explain

what the following acronyms stand for. To illustrate their meanings, you are asked to give

examples of each one of them.

• L1 and L2.

• EFL and ESL.

• ESP, EST and EAP.

• CBI and CLIL.

• STT and TTT.

• FES and LES.

• CLL and CLT.

Answer:

L1: language 1. Example the student`s natives

L2: language 2. Example, the language being learning or study.

ESL: English as a second language. Example: Josh moved to Canada to ESL in schools.

EST: English for science and technology. Example: Topics for specially aimed at EST.

ESP: English for specific purposes. Example: students whose first language is not English

EAP: English for academics purposes. Example:To use language appropriately for study

CBI: Content based instruction. Example:To provide second-language learners instruction in

content

CLT: Communicative Language teaching. Example: Approach to language teaching

CLIL: Content and language integrated learning. Example: Content and simultaneous learning

of a foreign language

CLL: Communicative language learning. Example: Language teaching approach

FES: Fluent English speaker. Example: English speakers frequently

LES: Limited English speaker. Example: English speakers are not fluent

STT: Student talk time. Example: Clarification and express doubts

TTT: Teacher talking time. Example. Teacher centered

Step 2: Browse the net and look for around ten more acronyms related to English language

education. Provide their meaning and examples of application of the terms

Answer:

ALM: Audio lingual method

ALLC: Applied linguistics for the language classroom

ELL: English language learner

EVP: English for vocational purposes

FLT: Foreign language teaching

PPP: Presentation, practice and production

SLA: Second language acquisition

TOELF: Test of English as a foreign language

TOEIC: Test of English for international communication

Step 3: Individually, make an Electronic Database of the most useful acronyms for

English language teaching and include the list given in activity 2 and your own list.
