Proposed Title Flow Characterization of Storm Water Runoff in
Saint Louis College.
Research Title
Background of the Water is essential to all life – human,
Study animal and vegetation. At the present we
witness a continuous growth of the global
population with more than 7.7 Billion people
living on earth. Due to globalization,
industrialization and population growth the
demands for the availability of fresh water
resources increases through time.
Groundwater is the main source to satisfy the
global water demand at the present. However,
many cases are known, were groundwater
utilization needed to be terminated as a result
of overexploitation, decreasing recharge, salt
water intrusion, contamination or poor
sanitation.
The earth surface receives roughly 500,000
km3 precipitations/year. From that
approximately 110,000 km3 are received by
the continents which cover 21% of the earth
surface. Approximately 38,800 km3 from the
various precipitations are directly transported
back to the atmosphere by evaporation. The
potential for Rainwater Harvesting is assessed
with 14,000 – 25,000 km3 that represents a
water volume 4 - 5 times higher as the
available water from rivers on earth which is
greater that the volume of all available
groundwater resources.
Rainwater can be harvested on-site and
used for non-potable purposes. Rainwater
harvesting, is a technology used for collecting,
conveying and storing rainwater for human
use from rooftops, land surfaces or rock
catchments using simple techniques such as
jars and pots as well as engineered
mechanisms. It is a very conventional way to
address water supply demands wherein the
natural water resources have failed to meet the
needs of the people. Rainwater harvesting has
been adopted in many parts of the world, like
in Delhi, India wherein it is a state policy to
include it in the designs. Developed countries
like, Germany, Japan, United States, and
Singapore are also adopting this technology as
another source of water supply.
Philippine population is currently at 108.5
million and is growing steadily at a rate of
1.72% annually. Our population contributes
1.4% of the total world population and we are
currently ranked 13 in the list of the most
populated countries in the world. Assuming an
average daily water demand of 100
liter/capita/day, the Philippines have to
provide 4 billion m3 of fresh water annually to
meet the demands of each Filipino.
In the Philippines, rainfall is mostly not
seen as a water resource but often regarded as
a hindrance and a disaster. It is considered as
a waste which is being discharged into the
drainage systems. As of the day, there is no
regulative system into the discharged of
rainwater into the drainages.
In adherence to the adaptation measures
on the impact of climate change and the
government’s program on water conservation,
the Department of Public Works and Highways
Regional Office I will implement this year the
Rain Water Collection System (RWCS). RA
6716 provides for the construction of water
wells, rainwater collectors, development of
springs and rehabilitation of existing water
wells in different barangays all over the
country.
La Union shows high demand of water
consumption due to the population. The issue
of scarcity is felt due to the disastrous effects
of continuous raining and flooding. Water
servicing companies fail to provide clean or at
some part, even clear water. Water rationing is
done to answer the complaints of the
consumers. With these issues it is a must for
the consumers to conserve and at all means to
recycle any available source of water. La Union
suffers from unpredictable long term raining
and drought. The idea of rain water harvesting
can complement the two. (“Water harvesting
program: Region 1”. National Economic
Development Authority Region 1)
Saint Louis College lacks water supply most of
the time. Based on the information gathered
from the study conducted in Water Resources
Engineering course, the water supply coming
from the deep wells inside the campus are not
sufficient to meet the demands of the
increasing population of the school. This
results to lack of water in comfort rooms
throughout the day. Furthermore, the existing
storm water management of the campus
drains to the nearby body of water which is
not one of the best practices considering the
environmental effect to the body of water.

Research Problem Main:
The study aims to promote rooftop rainwater
harvesting technology as an additional water supply
in Saint Louis College. It showcases how the
building’s rooftop could be effectively and efficiently
harnessed to harvest rainwater for Non-domestic
use.
Specific:
Specifically, it sought to answer the following
questions:
1. What is the profile of Saint Louis College in
terms of:
a. Population
b. Number of Buildings
c. Roof Catchment Area
d. Gutter Drainage System
e. Water Storage Facilities
f. Water Supply
g. Water Demand for Non-Domestic use
2. What are the existing storm water management
practices in the campus?
3. What validated rainwater harvesting facilities
and activities can be proposed?
Hypotheses or The study will be guided by the following
Assumptions assumptions:
1. Rainwater harvesting facilities will contribute to
the increase of water supply in Saint Louis
College. It will be a great help to meet the non-
domestic water demands of the campus. It will
lessen the rate of pumping out of water from our
wells and ground water sources. It will also be a
great way to decrease the runoff and an efficient
way to divert the storm water.
2. A comprehensive rainwater catchment facility
and activities can be made out of the gathered
data from the profile of Saint Louis College in
terms of population, number of buildings, roof
catchment area, gutter drainage system, water
storage facilities, water supply, and water
demand for non-domestic use.
