T1 - Universal Beam

The document provides an example design problem for a universal beam used in a library floor system. It summarizes the given loads and dimensions. It then shows the design and checking calculations for Beam A, including: selecting a 356x127 UB section based on moment capacity; checking deflection and shear; and designing the bolted end connection using 20mm bolts and a 6mm fillet weld to connect to a 215x150mm plate.

Structural Steel Design (BS 5950-1:2000) Universal Beam

Example (Design)
The figure shows a part of floor of a library with book storage. The floor is a reinforced concrete slab
supported on simply supported universal beams. Using grade steel, determine a suitable section for
beam (A) & (B) and design their end connections considering the following data:

Estimated dead loads on the floor area:

Slab + finishes + ceiling + partitions +
services + fire protection
Beam self-weight (Assumed)
Imposed load on the floor area
For end connections use:
- 20mm diameter Non-preloaded bolts grade 8.8.
- 6mm fillet weld (Electrode class 35).
- 215×150 plate with 8 mm thk, for secondary beam.
- And 150×75×10L bracket angle, for main beam.

Solution:

 Design of Beam (A), it is secondary beam
