Ms.
Galik’s 4th Grade Lesson Plan
Subject: Science\Writing Date: October 12, 2020
CCSD Common Core Standards:
7.4.1 - Investigate and describe the behavior of individual organisms when influenced by
internal cues (e.g. hunger) and by external cues (e.g. environment).
7.3.1 - Investigate and describe how various living things behave differently under
diverse conditions.
9.8.3 - Investigate and describe how biological adaptations include changes that
enhance survival and reproductive success in a particular environment.
9.12.3 - Simulate and explain how the adaptation of a species can occur over many
generations because of the unique characteristics that favor those individuals in an
environment.
9.12.5. - Explain how the extinction of species is a common occurrence and fossil
records indicate that most species that have lived on the earth no longer exist.
9.12.4 - Explain how the classification of species is based on similarities (e.g., structural,
genetic, molecular) which indicate evolutionary relationships.
9.12.7 - Explain how there is evidence that at least a billion years ago, cells with nuclei
existed allowing the evolution of increasingly complex multicellular organisms
1.A.2.1 - Use digital tools to brainstorm and organize new ideas.
1.A.8.1 - Apply existing knowledge to independently generate new ideas, products, or
processes with digital tools.
3.B.8.2 - Use digital tools to organize information with main ideas and supporting
documentation.
OBJECTIVES:
● Students will be able to explain the history of their chosen dinosaur
● Students can identify the different body parts of the dinosaur
● Students will be able to explain the diet of the dinosaur
● Students will be able to explain the life timeline of the dinosaur
● Students will be able to properly use the basic functions of Google Docs
● Students will be able to ‘Save’ a Google Doc
INTRO ACTIVITY:
1. To begin, the teacher will ask the students to sit quietly in their assigned seats
and play this youtube video to refresh the students’ memory of dinosaurs.
[Link]
a. They had a science dinosaur project a few weeks ago
2. After watching this video, the students will pull out their “Dinosaur Project Notes”
from their folders.
a. This will be a sheet where they have personalized notes about a specific
dinosaur they chose for their project.
3. Once the students have their Dinosaur Project Notes out, the teacher will begin
the activity.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
1. The teacher will begin by asking the students to quietly read over their Dinosaur
Project Notes
2. After about 5 minutes, the teacher will ask the students if they remember learning
about their specific dinosaurs and writing a research paper on them.
3. After students respond, the teacher will then inform them that they are going to
further their research on this project.
4. The teacher will then begin the lesson by telling the students that one of the most
important parts of a dinosaur, is its diet.
a. The teacher will tell the students that there are many different parts of the
food chain. This is a keyword that the students will need to remember.
b. The teacher will play this quick video to give the students a visual as to
what most dinosaurs eat
[Link]
[Link]
c. Parts of the food chain are herbivore (organisms that eat plants),
carnivore (organisms that eat animals), and omnivore (animals that eat
both animals and plants)
d. Once the teacher reviews this with the students a few times, he\she will
tell the students that while most dinosaurs are herbivores, some of the
bigger ones are carnivores, and feast on smaller dinosaurs.
5. The teacher will then tell the students that we are moving on to an activity that
ties in with the lesson they just learned. He\she will order students to grab a
Chromebook from the Laptop Cart.
6. Once students have a laptop, the teacher will ask them to quietly login, go to
Google Chrome, and wait for further instructions.
7. Once all students are there, the teacher will ask the class if they have ever used
Google Docs before. After they respond, show them how to open Google Docs
on the class projector.
8. From here, the teacher will instruct students to open a “Blank Document”.
9. Once here, the teacher will instruct the students to keep their hands off of the
computer and ask for their full attention on the projector.
10. After this, the teacher will show the students the basic functions that Google Docs
offers (font and font size and color, bold, underline, italics, highlighting, indenting,
bullet points, line spacing, save, save as, etc).
a. The teacher will teach the students these technological tools by having
them look at the projector, and then instructing them to find the same tool
on their laptop.
11. After this lesson, the teacher will then give students 10-15 minutes to explore the
Doc and use all of the tools they learned.
12. After exploring Google Docs, the teacher will ask the students to stop and pay
attention.
13. The teacher will then inform the students of their assignment. The students are
going to type a 1-2 page essay about the diet of the dinosaur they chose.
a. Students are required to underline and bold the title of their essay and
italicize proper nouns.
b. The students also have to have at least 2 sources to back their claims.
c. That being said, there also has to be a work cited page with the proper
MLA format citations.
14. Once the teacher informs the students of what is expected of them, they will ask
the class if they have any questions, and then tell them to get started on their
essay.
MATERIALS:
● Dinosaur Project Notes
● Chromebook
● Internet Access
● Projector
LEVELS OF BLOOM’S TAXONOMY FOR THIS LESSON:
X Knowledge X Comprehension X Application
__ Analysis __ Synthesis __ Evaluation
SPECIAL NEEDS ACCOMMODATIONS: In case there needs to be any special
needs accommodations, use the following directions to help assist the specific
student(s).
● If a student with autism is having a hard time understanding the assignment or is
easily getting frustrated or anxious by their expectations, ask them to quietly read
over their Dinosaur Project Notes.
○ This will give them time to relax while focusing on their dinosaur.
● Once they have calmed down, have them use the class computer (it is larger, has
bigger keys, and is easier to navigate) to open Google Docs.
● Then ask them to simply type out their Dinosaur Project Notes.
○ They will focus on translating the words from their paper to the screen.
● If a student has a visual impairment, get them set up on a new blank document
on Google Docs. Then ask them to step outside of the classroom into a quieter
area. They can then use the Microphone Tool that Google Docs offers. All they
have to do is say out loud what they want to type, and Google Docs will
automatically type it out for them.
POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS TO OTHER SUBJECTS:
● Art - Have students draw a picture of their dinosaur, or create a 3D model
● History - The research project can teach them about the history of the dinosaur
era and other species that lived during that time
