1. Describe and define the union of sets, intersection of sets and difference of two sets through Venn diagrams;
2. Perform the union of sets, intersection of sets and difference of two sets using Venn diagrams; and
3. Display patience in working during activity.

Possible responses:
Pictures, circles, closed curves, a diagram representing mathematical or logical sets pictorially as circles or closed curves within an

A Venn Diagram is a pictorial representation of the relationships between sets.

We can represent sets using Venn diagrams. In a Venn diagram, the sets are represented by shapes; usually circles or ovals. The
elements of a set are labeled within the circle.

The following diagrams show the set operations and Venn Diagrams for Complement of a Set, Disjoint Sets, Subsets, Intersection and
Union of Sets.

Venn diagrams can be used to solve word problems involving union and intersection of sets. Here are some worked out examples:
1. A group of 25 high school students were asked whether they use either Facebook or Twitter or both. Fifteen of these students use
Facebook and twelve use Twitter.
a. How many use Facebook only?
b. How many use Twitter only?
c. How many use both social networking sites?

Solution:
Let S1 = set of students who use Facebook only
S2 = set of students who use both social networking sites
S3 = set of students who use Twitter only
