Answer Key Circulatory System Quiz

This document contains a quiz on the circulatory system. It asks students to match structures like arteries, veins, heart, etc. to their functions in transporting blood and nutrients. It also asks students to describe the pericardium, list functions of the circulatory system, and explain the differences between the pulmonary and systemic circuits. Images are included to label structures like the bicuspid valve, myocardium, right ventricle, and aorta. Questions ask about the opening and closing of atrioventricular valves during systole and diastole as well as the conducting system of the heart.

Questions

1. Match the structure and its function. Write the

corresponding letter describing the function of the
structure on the line. (6 points)
A. branch into capillaries
B. capillaries converge into these
C. transport blood to the heart
D. transport blood away from the heart
E. sites of nutrient, electrolyte, gas, and waste
exchange
F. muscular pump that forces blood through arteries
(1) Arteries__D____
(2) Veins___C____
(3) Heart____F___
(4) Capillaries____E____
(5) Venules____B____
(6) Arterioles____A_____

2. Briefly describe the pericardium and its function. (3

points)
The pericardium is a double serous membrane that encloses
the heart. Visceral pericardium (aka epicardium) is the
innermost layer while the parietal pericardium is the outer
layer heart. There is a pericardial cavity, which is a space
between the parietal and visceral layers of the pericardium
that contains a small volume of serous fluid that is
secreted by the pericardial membrane. This fluid reduces
the friction between the membranes as the heart moves within
them.
3. List at least 2 functions of the circulatory system. (2
points)
Pumps blood throughout the body
Removes waste throughout the body
Carry nutrient throughout the body

4. How does the pulmonary circuit differ from the systemic

circuit of the cardiovascular system? (3 points)
The pulmonary circuit provides blood flow between the heart
and lungs. It sends deoxygenated blood to lungs to pick up
oxygen and unload carbon dioxide.

The systemic circuit allows blood to flow to and from the

rest of the body. It sends oxygenated blood and nutrients to
all body cells and removes waste.

5. For each image, write the name of the structure the arrow
is pointing to on the line provided. (5 points)

______Bicuspid Valve__________
________myocardium_________

____Right Ventricle__________
___________Aorta____________

__________Septum______________
6. Systole refers to when the heart contracts and pumps blood
to our bodies. Diastole refers to the period where the heart
relaxes and the heart chambers fill with blood. Explain what
is happening to the atrioventricular valves during systole
and diastole. (Hint: are they open or closed)(6 points)
Systole: AV valves close to allow the heart to pump blood
to the rest of the body
Diastole: AV valves open to allow blood to fill into the
heart chambers

Removed Questions

Describe the conducting system of the heart and list its

components.(6 points)
The conducting system of the heart, which is made up of
specialized cardiac muscle fibers, is responsible for the
initiation and conduction of the cardiac muscle. It consists of
the SA node, AV node, Bundle of His, Right and left branches of
bundle of His, and Purkinje Fibers.

Distinguish between the roles of the SA node and AV node.(2

points)
The SA node signals the atria to contract (often called the
anatomical pacemaker due to this). The AV node signals the
ventricles to contract.
