Control Lab Exp 06

The document introduces an experiment using programmable logic controllers to implement basic logic gates. The experiment uses an Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1500 controller, PC45 trainer, and accessory kit to design ladder logic diagrams for AND, OR, XOR, NOR, and NAND gates. By toggling bits and observing outputs, the experiment successfully implemented different logic gates through ladder logic programs on the PLC as intended.

Title: An Introduction to Industrial Programmable Controllers Using PC45/ML. (Part I).

Abstract: PLC: A PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER (PLC) is an industrial

computer control system that continuously monitors the state of input devices and makes
decisions based upon a custom program to control the state of output devices. In this experiment,
some industrial programmable controllers were designed using timer. The main objective of this
experiment is to learn the use of different switches and timers.
Introduction: In industry, many manufacturing processes demand a sequence of operations,
which are to be performed repetitively. Early automation systems were mechanical in design,
timing, and sequencing being affected by gears and cams. Slowly these design concepts were
replaced by electrical drives, which were controlled by relays.
Apparatus:
i. Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1500 Programmable Controller.
ii. PC45 Programmable Controller Trainer.
iii. PC45 Accessory kit.
iv. PC49 Hand held compressor pump.
Experimental Procedure:
Implementation of different logic gates by using ladder logic program:
a. Ladder diagram of AND gate:

b. Ladder diagram of Exclusive-OR gate:

c. Ladder diagram of OR gate:

d. Ladder diagram of NOR gate:

e. Ladder diagram of NAND gate:

Discussion: In this experiment ladder diagram of some basic logic gates were designed. To
design the ladder diagram RSLinx, RSLogix Micro Starter English and RSEmulator 500 were
used. After designing the ladder diagram the outputs of different terminals were observed. The
bits were toggled and the corresponding outputs were observed. The experiment was
successfully done as all the goals that were initially set were achieved.
