MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING
between the
COLUMBIA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
and the
COLUMBIA COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION
DEPARTMENT of SCHOOL SAFETY
WHEREAS, the Sheriff of Columbia County, Georgia, Clay N. Whittle, and the Director of the Columbia
County Board of Education Department of School Safety, Lance Poss, are committed to the highest degree
of professional law enforcement service to their respective service areas, all principals agree to the
following Memorandum of Understanding:
1. There shall be routine patrol by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office deputies within the jurisdiction of any
Columbia County schoo! campus.
2. Columbia County deputies observing violations within the jurisdiction of any Columbia County school campus
shall take proper police action immediately and request the presence of a Columbia County Board of Education
Department of School Safety officer at the scene to show professional working respect.
3. Violations of the law reported to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, which occurred or are occurring within
the jurisdiction of any Columbia County school campus shall be handled by the Columbia County Sheriff’ Office
exclusively. The decision to bring criminal charges will rest solely with the Sheriff's Office and any illegal
contraband or any illegal substance taken into possession will remain in the custody of the Sheriff's Office. The
Columbia County Board of Education Department of Schoo! Safety will not house or retain evidence gathered in
the course of any investigation.
4. Additionally, Columbia County deputies may enter the jurisdiction of any school campus:
) When in pursuit of violators.
b)_ When requested by Columbia County Board of Education Department of School Safety officer to provide
assistance.
©) When performing follow-up investigation of reported events which occurred outside the jurisdiction of the
school campus.
5. Columbia County Board of Education Department of School Safety officers shall notify the Columbia County
Sheriff's Office immediately upon detection of a crime or upon the receipt of information that a crime is about
to be committed.
6. The Sheriff of Columbia County reserves the right to request assistance the Georgia Bureau of Investigation
shoytd/he feel that such assistance is justified.
