I have watched the interesting video. It is a video all about the “Controversial Gender
Issues in Athletics Nancy Navalta”. The video is news about athletes and the speaker told the
viewers about the controversy of the athlete Nancy Navalta’ gender issue. The speaker didn’t just
discuss the controversy but also what happened to Nancy Navalta after the gender issue comes
out and how he overcomes the issue. Also, she discussed the gender issue of Nancy which turns
out that Nancy is an intersex person. He has androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) therefore,
Nancy is genetically male but the external appearance of their genitals can be female or
somewhere between male and female. The amazing thing is, Nancy Navalta continued his life as
a teacher of physical education (PE) despite his gender issues.
The video about Nancy Navalta opened my eyes to Hermaphrodites or Intersexuality.
Nancy Navalta is an athlete who’s been successful in his sports when the controversy comes out
and made him stop to protect his private life. At first, I thought that the video is just a simple
issue of an athlete just like a famous celebrity but turns out that it is not. Nancy’s condition is the
same as androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) which means a rare condition that affects the
development of a child’s genitals and reproductive organs. I am surprise about his condition
because it is very rare. I also felt sorry for him because he really wanted to continue being an
athlete but can’t go on because of the issue. It turns out that the problem is Nancy’s rare gender
condition, and the people who are judging him without knowing the real story.
I think the solution for this controversy is simple, which is to become more open and be a
listener for those who have the same condition as him. We should not judge right away because
it judging someone can have negative effect to someone. And if you are one of those who have
rare condition then I think you should consult to a doctor to make sure what is really happening
to you so that it won’t happen to you what Nancy experienced. These types of people can be
good at something else. They should develop and gain experiences in those things that they
really like and understand. Nancy proved that if the person has a rare condition or disabilities, it
doesn’t mean that they are not among us. Because just like us, Nancy can also hear, speak and
see.
Furthermore, this video really impressed me that I wanted to listen and be open to
those have the same condition a him. I think this video is a combination of interesting,
informative and educational video. Nancy’s condition made the audience become interested and
made us understand him even more. This video can be useful for parents because it talks about a
child who has a rare condition. Therefore, this will help us understand people with rare gender
condition.
In my conclusion, the video focused on intersexuality or AIS which is a rare genital
condition of a child, who can be a female or somewhere between male and female. This video
amazed me so much in a way that I was able to learn a condition of a person that is very rare.
Nancy’s controversial issue may cause him to stop him being an athlete but that doesn’t mean he
will stop moving forward as well. For me, people like Nancy is very strong because he were able
overcome his difficulties and became a better person. It only means that everyone of us should
understand and reconsider our perception of this condition and stop judging right away.
