6
Round Nails
The round nails shape is a timeless classic. Just like square nails, it’s
completely straight with the ends curved instead of squared.

Squoval Nails
Imagine merging square and oval nails, squoval nails would be the result! This
means that the nails begin its growth as a square shape, only for the tip to be filed
down into a gentle oval shape.

Pointed Nails
While the stiletto has a gradual sharp tip, this nail shape resembles a triangle
with a seriously pointy tip.

Stilettos are not only high heels; they are also nail shapes! To achieve this shape,
file the nail to a sharp end, much more extreme than the almond shape. There’s also
stiletto’s younger sister – the square stiletto shape, which means that instead of a
super sharp tip, you’ll end with a square tip.

Square Nails
This shape is straight with sharp square corners. No flaring, no narrowing –
just a straight shape. These are popular short, but also can be worn long.

Oval Nails
This shape is filed from the sides and the tips, creating a lovely oval shape.
This is the go-to shape to make fingers look slimmer.

How to decide on what nail shape suits me most?

The first step is to look at the nail shape you naturally have and your fingers.
If your fingers are delicate and slim, rounder shapes will work better. If your fingers
are on the wider side, overly rounded shapes such as almond or a sharp stiletto may

7
not look as natural, but a squared oval shape or squoval may take your manicure to
the next level!

The best nail shape for your fingers: a handy guide to hands

What’s your hand type?

The proportion of your palm and the length of your fingers all come into play when
finding the most flattering nail shape for your hands. Now, let’s take a closer look
to see what great hands you have:

Hi-Five hands: long palm, short fingers

Best nail shape: Oval. This shape will help make your fingers appear longer and
more slender to balance out the length of your palm. File the sides of your nails
straight and gently taper the free edge into a semicircle.

Grounded hands: wide palm, short fingers

Best nail shape: Almond and Oval. These tapered shapes elongate shorter or wider
fingers. We recommend that you opt for rounded shapes in general, especially if
you have a wide nail bed.

Piano hands: wide palm, long fingers

Best nail shape: Coffin (or Ballerina). This edgy shape is enhanced by long fingers
and balanced by a square palm. They do require some sturdy nails and regular TLC
to avoid breakages.

Generous hands: long palm, long fingers

8
Best nail shape: Square, lucky you. You can get away with wearing this blunt look
at any length. And they are one of the more practical, low-maintenance shapes to
wear to work.

How to Shape Nails Step by Step

First off, let’s start right at the very beginning. You need to wash your hands
and ensure they are clean before you file your nails. By doing this you will remove
any film or oil that could disrupt your filing, or cause jagged edges or unequal
sides. It goes without saying that you then need to ensure your hands are
competently dry; remember liquid has a dehydrating effect and can cause your
nails to break whilst you file.

File or Clipper to shape Nails?

The most traditional and effective way to shape nails is using a nail file.
This is usually the best method as the standard nail length does not warrant other
equipment. If your nails are on the longer side, you can always use a clipper to
trim your nails back. This way, you can use the clipper to snip your nails first, and
then work on the shapes with a file after-saving you a lot of time as filing alone
would take forever. But be careful not to trim off too much nail-always trim a small
bit at a time so that you can reach your desired length.

Glass File to Shape Naked Nails

Regarding the type of file that you use, they can all be effective, but we
personally use this glass file. We love a glass file because you can nail shape more
detail due to the fine small crystals. They’re incredibly hygienic and this one even
travels well. A glass file is particularly effective for shaping almond nails.
Made from crystals, a glass file is renowned for lasting much longer and
prevents the tearing of your nails like metal file has been known to cause. The
extra-fine grit of a glass nail file will also give you more control and make the
shaping far.
Once you’ve filed your nails down to your required length, your next step is to
decide what nail shape you’d like.

Deciding on your Nail Shapes

If you’re wondering what shape would look best you can always consider the
shape of your own cuticles (curved, squared, have rounded edges?)- this is a simple
way to discover what nail shape will look best.
We will now outline the most popular and traditional nail shapes and then explain
how to shape your nails:

Square Nails
Great shape for longer nails and the most likely you will see on other women.
Its functional and shouldn’t break too easily.

9
To create beautiful square nails:
1. Trim your nails to your desired length (if required).
2. File each nail straight in one direction across your entire nail.
3. To complete the square file gently around the edges and tidy up and outlying
nail.

Oval Nails
Great for growing most functional and less likely to break.

For Oval Shape:

1. You will want to file your nails into the shape of an egg.
2. To do this grasp the nail file at an angle and work your way along until you
have covered the entire circumference of your nail.
Next onto our favorite nail shape and the reason behind the site, is the almond
nail, these make your fingers look slimmer.

To shape almond nails

1. Make a mark of a small circle in the middle point of your nail-you will need to
file toward that mark.
2. At an angle, file just off the center of your nail and be sure to leave a flat tip to
round out.
3. Once you’ve created an angled look by filing each side, file any rough edges to
shape the nail into the almond.

10
Nail Maintenance and Treatment

Once you’ve shaped your nails, we recommend that you buffer them to make
them glow and look rather than crisp. Additionally, you can apply cuticle oil to
moisturize them and prevent them from cracking and breaking. This will keep them
healthy.
Finally, be sure to file your nails every couple of weeks to keep them at the
desired length. No more than this as you will cause damage. This is an important
tip in doing your nails most effectively.
