1. PURPOSE:
This methodology is proposed for providing permanent shore protection using sheet piles, at
Kakkanad for Kochi Water Metro Project (Phase 1 Stage 1A).
2. SCOPE:
The scope of work includes the following
Sheetpile permanently installed for shoring protection.
Rcc Capping above the sheet pile.
Grade beam construction activities
U.G sump construction activities

WORK METHODOLOGY:
Preparatory Works
At present the shore is temporary protected by damaged R.R masonary. As
per the Gfc drawing the setting out will be done and if any loose rubble /placed in the setting
line that has to be remove properly for smooth erection.
Permanent Liner (Sheet Piles) Installation
Prefabricated Interlocking sheet pile of approximately 10mm thick and 12m
depth (or as per design requirement) will be driven using vibro hammer/Movax fixed on
Crane. The vertically of the sheet pile has to checked during driving process at regular

interval. Consecutive sheet piles are driven by locking on the previous installed sheet pile
forming a continuous structural barrier. At top portion of the sheet pile encasing will be with
RCC coping beam of size recommended by designer. Also welding shall be done on sheet
pile joints up to water level.
U.G sump Construction
The activities involved temporary sheet piling or similar protection around the
U.G sump area to prevent the side collapsing and arresting the water seepage, Excavation,
dewatering, bottom PCC, reinforcement activity, shuttering and side supports, concreting
without construction joints and curing arrangements.
7.0 RESPONSIBILITY
The Project Manager is wholly responsible for all the process
The Planning Engineer is responsible for planning the works & monitoring the actual
progress with respect to the planned progress.
The Site in charge will be responsible to ensure the proper sequence of works along
with appropriate preceding & succeeding activities and to confirm the resources
availability at site.
The QA/QC Engineer is responsible to conduct the relevant field & laboratory tests,
and maintaining all such details in relevant records as per the ISO requirements. He
shall ensure that all tests (in house and third party) are conducted as per Quality test
plan.
The HSE officer is responsible to examine the risk / hazard for this particular activity
and to prepare a plan to eliminate the risk/hazard and to protect the safe environment
& ensure workmen safety.

The Store in charge is responsible to procure the required materials as per the
engineer’s requirement and to keep the relevant records.
8.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE
Sheet Piles shall be installed as accurately as possible according to drawings.
Greater care shall be executed in respect of installation.
If any deviation is observed the same shall be recorded and correct it as soon as
possible.
Proper care shall be taken to ensure the correct implementation of the working
procedures described in this method statement.
9.0 SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT
Working area shall be barricaded and display boards shall be provided.Lighting of 55
lux shall be provided in the working zone at night times.
Only certified plant and machineries shall be put in operation.
Operators shall have sufficient relevant experience and valid license to operate the
machineries.
Safety stewards shall be engaged for monitoring to avoid unsafe conditions and
unsafe acts.
All the staff and workmen shall be provided with personal protective equipment like
safety helmets, safety hand gloves, safety shoes, safety goggles, retro reflective
jackets and ear plugs as per the requirement.
First aid box shall be made available at site office.
Safety cones and flags shall be used to control the traffic.

No stranger shall be allowed in the vicinity of the working area.
The crush zones of piling rig/cranes shall be barricaded for a distance of 1 m using
safety cones.
The swinging area of the piling rig (especially during spoiling off) shall also be
barricaded for a distance of 2 m using safety cones.
