What Is It

The document describes five different rock types - pumice, chalk, marble, sandstone, and coal. It provides descriptions of each rock's appearance, texture, composition and formation. Pumice is a lightweight volcanic rock with gas bubbles. Chalk is a soft, white limestone. Marble is a metamorphic form of limestone. Sandstone is made of cemented sand grains. Coal is a sedimentary fuel source formed from ancient plant matter.

WHAT IS IT

Collect at least five rock samples in your place and take a photo of the samples.
Describe the characteristics of each rock depending on their apperance, texture,
color, and layers(or bands). Then Classify them as to igneous, sedimentary, or
metamorphic rock.

TYPE OF ROCK: Igneous

DESCRIPTION: Pumice is a kind of volcanic rock with a very small grain size. In
terms of color, it ranges from a very light gray to a medium gray. There are many
empty gas bubbles in it, making it extremely light and sponge-like in appearance.

IMPORTANCE: To make high-quality cement and lightweight, insulating

construction materials, pumice is an important industrial resource.

TYPE OF ROCK: Sedimentary

DESCRIPTION: Chalk is a white-to-grayish type of limestone that is soft, fine-

grained, and readily crushed. Chalk is a non-clastic carbonate sedimentary rock,
whereas calcite is a mineral.

IMPORTANCE: The porous nature of chalk means that it can store a significant
amount of water. These rock types can act as a natural reservoir that slowly releases
water, which is a huge benefit in drought-prone areas.
TYPE OF ROCK: Metamorphic

DESCRIPTION: Marble is a metamorphic rock made up of recrystallized carbonate

minerals, primarily calcite or dolomite. Marble is often a lighter colored rock. Marble
is a three Mohs hardness material because of its calcite content.

IMPORTANCE: Marbles are used principally for buildings and monuments, interior
decoration, statuary, table tops, and novelties.

TYPE OF ROCK: Sedimentary

DESCRIPTION: Sandstones are made of sand grains that have been cemented
together. Like sandpaper, sandstones usually have a rough, granular texture, but to
really identify a sandstone you have to peer closely at its surface and look for
individual sand grains.

IMPORTANCE: Sandstones are economically important as major reservoirs for both

petroleum and water, as building materials, and as valuable sources of metallic ores.
TYPE OF ROCK: Sedimentay

DESCRIPTION: Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock,

formed as rock strata called coal seams.

IMPORTANCE: Coal is a combustible rock and, along with oil and natural gas, it is
one of the three most important fossil fuels. Coal has a wide range of uses; the most
important use is for the generation of electricity.
