Essay: Why is accurate perception and observation very important in nursing?
(Minimum of 5 sentences)
It is said that although our perception is very accurate, it is not perfect. As a nurse, it is
our responsibility to provide effective care to our patients. That’s why nurses are continually
observing and assessing patients' health in all clinical settings. This responsibility is affiliated
with the accountability that giving patient care should be done with accurate perception and
observation. These attributes are useful for identifying the condition of our patients, if there are
deficiencies or problems, which is then used to inform the care team to formulate and provide
appropriate management for the patient. With these, we will be able to render high quality
nursing care while preventing errors.
Essay: Give 3 causes of inaccurate perception and explain how does this affect us as
nurses?
Defective functioning of sense organs – this involves problems with our senses—
hearing, vision, smell, touch, and taste. If our senses are impaired or lost, we may or will
not be able to properly handle and process sensory information. These dysfunctions
may lead to errors such as medication errors, improper documentation, falling accidents,
etc.
Inadequate stimulus – Stimuli is an object or event that elicits response. So, in clinical
settings, inadequate stimuli could result in decrease response from the nurse. This could
lead to malpractice or negligence.
Too many stimuli at the same time – On the other hand, simultaneous or increased
stimuli at the same time may cause confusion and chaos. Nurses in this situation may
find it hard to focus or pay attention to all of them at once. This could lead to inaccuracy
and errors.
Essay: Why do we need to be cultural and linguistically competent as nurses? (Minimum
of 5 sentences)
As a future nurse, it is important to learn about concepts of transcultural nursing and the
role of culture in caring for patients in healthcare settings. Through this course, I have learned
about different cultures and beliefs from different groups, and our linguistic differences and their
factors. With the knowledge that I’ve acquired, I am fully aware that a nurse should be culturally
and linguistically competent to provide nursing care that is both culturally competent and
culturally sensitive in nature. Also, it provides us the skills to negotiate cultural differences
between us, the nurses, to our patients regarding health concerns. It also helps us to
communicate effectively using culturally appropriate language.
