Market Leader, Upper-Intermediate

Unit 1 Communication: Review

1. Choose the best word to complete each sentence.

1 Liam is a very articulate /responsive speaker. He expresses his ideas clearly and
effectively.
2 Your talk is limited to 10 minutes, so you need to be eloquent /succinct.
3 I'm afraid I still don't know much about the launch. The Marketing Manager gave a
presentation about it, but he wasn't very hesitant / coherent. I don't think he was
prepared.
4 I've asked Elise to attend the meeting. She's very persuasive /coherent, and I think she can
get a good deal for us.
5 Not all politicians are fluent I eloquent. Some even have their speech written and then
read from an auto-cue.
6 Speakers can explain /engage the audience by telling interesting personal stories and
by making eye contact.
7 You have to concentrate and listen /explain to the questions the audience asks.

2. You can use these phrases to repair communication breakdown. Put each phrase in the
correct situation:
Can you slow down a little? What does “kudos” mean?

Could you please speak up? I'm not sure what you mean.

Did you say 18% or 80%? Could you give me some more

details, please?

It's a terrible connection. Let me call you back in 10 minutes.

Could you hold on a sec? I need to get a pen

Situation What we can say

Someone is speaking too fast

Someone is speaking too quietly

You need the other speaker

to
pause
You didn't understand a word

You don't understand the

idea/
proposal generally
You are not sure you
