had my SIWES training.

1.1ABOUT STUDENTS INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE

SCHEME

Student Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a worldwide

program practiced in countries like Japan, Australia, USA, Europe,
and in African countries too. It is popularly known as co-operative
education and referred to as sandwich in Europe. It is a six (6) months
students industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) taken in the
third year of the degree program, where the students go to various
establishments related to their course of study.

The program was initially introduced in Nigeria by the Industrial

Training Fund (I.T.F.) which was established under Decree 47 of
1972 by the Supreme Military Council, headed by General Yakubu
Gowon. The Decree was billed to take e×ect from 31 March, 1974
and had as its core objective, the gradual reduction of the percentage
of foreign participation in most of Nigeria’s economic activities,
accompanied by a systematic cooperation  of locally oriented skilled
manpower into the vast economic sector. One of the key functions of
the ITF is to work as cooperative body with industry and commerce
where students in institutions of higher learning can undertake mid-
career work experience attachment in industries which are compatible
with student’s area of study. The students Industrial Work Experience
Scheme (SIWES) is a skill Training program designed to expose and
prepare students for the Industrial work situation which they are likely
to meet after graduation. Participation in SIWES has become a
necessary pre-condition for the award of diploma and degree
certificate in specificc disciplines in most institutions of higher
learning in the country in accordance with the education policy of
government.

CHAPTER FOUR

In this chapter, I will elaborate on what I did in the various

departments with steps and what I gained in each.

4.1 WEB DESIGN DEPARTMENT

During the course of the I.T, I learnt how to create a simple website
using WordPress as the platform. The following are steps to creating a
simple website:

 Buy a domain name and while purchasing your domain name,

you make sure the name is registered to your sever address
before you can create an account on the server.
 You create an account on the server and select the plan you want
in order to allocate web space and bandwidth.
 After creating the account, then your website will now have a
cpanel account to access it e.g. www.domainname.com/cpanel.
You can login to the Cpanel to create professional emails e.g.
[email protected].
 After that, you can install any platform you want to design your
website with from the Cpanel, e.g.
 E.G WordPress
 Wix
 After installing the platform you want to use, let's say
WordPress, then you login to begin to design the site e.g.
www.domainname.com/wp-admin.
 Then you will select the theme you want to use. After picking
the theme, you go to customize in order to edit the page.

During the course of editing the website and putting on contents, you
will need to install some necessary plugins (A plugin is a piece of
software containing a group of functions that can be added to
a WordPress website)

 CONTACT FORM 7 for form creation

 EASY SLIDER for picture slide show
 EASY GALLERY for gallery creation
 SANDWICH PAGE BUILDER for building
 WORDPRESS SEO for adding titles and descriptions
 W3 TOTAL CACHE to optimize for speed and performance
 SUCURI to monitor security
 DISQUS to write comments, e.t.c.

During the course of the training, I was opportuned to help work with
the creation of over five websites and managed to create my own
website. Some of the websites I worked on are:

4.2 RESEARCH DEPARTMENT

In the research department, I helped in proof reading articles to be in

the next edition of the company's magazine, I also typed some of the
articles before they were sent to the graphics department and I also
wrote an article which got published in the magazine. I was also lucky
to be one of those who went out to perform interviews with celebrities
for the articles to be written about them in the magazine.

4.3 GRAPHICS DEPARTMENT

In the graphics department, I helped in designing business cards based

on a new concept that the company was testing out. I also helped in
designing some of the graphics used in various websites that i was
involved in the creation. I made use of mostly Adobe Photoshop and a
bit of Corel Draw for d designs. I also designed some of the graphic
designs used for a wedding program the company was contracted to
print.

4.5 PHOTOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT

The photography department was where I had most of my training as

there was almost always something to do. Here, I took care of
photoshoots both in the photo studio and at other venues. I covered
weddings, naming ceremonies and other events as the official
photographer alot of times after which I would go back to the office to
edit photos taken both by me and the other photographers in the
department. In this department is where the photos for the company's
magazine and other publishings come from. Photobooks are collaged
on this department before being sent to the graphics department and I
was lucky enough to learn to edit and arrange photobooks. The
camera I used most of the time was a DSLR Canon D3100 and
sometimes, I use a DSLR Canon Mark IV D with different lengths of
lenses consisting of prime, macro and zoom lenses including
speedlights. I also have access to the equipments in the photo studio
including the snoot, condenser, red head light and other equipments
used to shoot professional photographs. I have also been opportuned
to work with some models and handle the camera during their
photoshoot. The software I used throughout my training is the Adobe
Lightroom which is one of the best photography editing softwares in
the world.

4.6 VIDEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT

In the videography department, I helped in taking video shoots at

events including weddings, award ceremonies, naming ceremonies
and other important events. I also helped to take music videos for
artists that recorded songs in the company's music studio. I also
helped in editing videos and clips for the company and I also created
montages for videos. I was introduced to different video editing
softwares like Filmora but the most prominent amongst them all was
the Adobe Premier Pro which is also one of the best in the world for
video editing and also Adobe After Effects which was the only
software we used for creating montages and adding various effects in
videos to be edited. It was used hand in hand with Premier Pro.

CONCLUSION

The SIWES programme undergone at baa Multimedia afforded me an

indepth exposure to some of the practical aspects of Web Design,
Article Research, Graphics Design, Photography and Videography.
The programme has been highly enlightening, beneficial, interesting
and successful. The objective of which the scheme was undergone
was however achieved.
4.3 RECOMMENDATIONS

I would like to use this medium to explore the Federal Government

at all stages to take this SIWES program more seriously as it is seen
by the students of Basic and Applied science as a virtual
improvement in future of technology in our nature. The government
should also ensure a proper supervision of the SIWES students so
that the purpose of the programme will be achieved. The Federal
government should make adequate provision in the annual budget
for proper funding of SIWES in view of the potential of the scheme to
contribute to enhancing the quality of the programme to increase
technical skill available to the economy. A comprehensive and
detailed directory of employer who accepts students for SIWES is
urgently required to facilitate placement of students in industry to
guarantee quality assurance of institution and the ITF. The ITF should
ensure that the backlog in payment of student’s allowance is cleared
urgently to remove the negative image being created for SIWES and
also for the allowance to be increased.
