UNDERSTAND
There are occasions in life that we need to deal with several situations at the same
time. We need to make decisions for certain purpose. Like for instance, when you
choose groupmates for a project, clothes to wear, flavored ice cream, passcodes, and
many more. However, in making decisions or in choosing items, sometimes the order
is important and at times not.

For example,

" Maga Ling prepare a fruit salad for her birthday.


It is a mixture or combination of apples, bananas
and pineapples. "

The arrangement of the fruits does not matter.


Whatever is the arrangement of the fruits, the result
is still a sumptuous fruit salad.
However,

" The passcode combination of her refrigerator is 930".

Now, the arrangement of the digits of the passcode is 0 0 0


important. “093" will not open the refrigerator nor the “039”.
It must be exactly 9-3-0.

In Mathematics, we use more specific language which can be classified as:

PERMUTATION and COMBINATION

A permutation is an arrangement of all or part of a set of objects, with regard


to the order of the arrangement.

A combination is a selection made from a group of items without regard to


their order.

Also, in our previous CapSLETs, we learned that both permutations and


combinations apply fundamental counting principle and deal with arrangements and
selection but still they differ from one another.
