[email protected]Greater Gallatin United Way Identifies Childcare Need and Coordinates Response
May 22, 2023 – Big Sky, Montana: With Summer just days away, working parents in Big
Sky were scrambling to find a solution to care for their kids as the new 4K Big Sky
School District program school year comes to an end.
“Families and business owners reached out to me pleading for a childcare solution”
states Kim Hall, President & CEO of Greater Gallatin United Way (GGUW). “If you are
working and/or living in Big Sky and have a 4 or 5 year old, there really aren’t many
options for summer programming, let alone affordable ones.”
A survey conducted by the Big Sky Child Care Task Force concluded that more than 40
families with 4- and 5-year-olds needed services.
GGUW went into action to create a Big Sky Summer Camp for preschoolers in just days.
“Our job is to take action,” Hall continues, “We mobilize resources, convene and
collaborate to provide solutions. We are pleased to have had quick response from area
agencies and funding partners to make this program a reality.”
Big Sky School District #72 stepped in with donated space while Lone Mountain Land
Company (LMLC), Spanish Peaks Community Foundation (SPCF), and Yellowstone Club
Community Foundation (YCCF) came together to prioritize funds in order to launch the
program and ensure its affordability.
Hannah Richardson, Executive Director of SPCF, recognized that, “This is Big Sky at its
best. Our ability to come together to address community needs has always been a
strength. We are grateful for this partnership with United Way to support our local,
working families with an affordable childcare summer program. We believe this is just
the beginning of the Big Sky Child Task Force’s ability to leverage existing partnerships
and programs to create more child care options for Big Sky parents.”
The program starts June 18th and will run for 8 weeks over the summer at Ophir
Elementary School from 8:30 – 5:30 Monday through Friday. Each week will have a
theme and engaging age-appropriate learning activities including literacy preparedness.
The cost is $200/week per child, but many will receive scholarships due to the
generosity of the community. Registration opens at the end of the week at
GreaterGallatinUnitedWay.org.
