EXPLORE
Imperative sentences are
used to issue a command or
instruction, make a request, or
offer advice they tell people what
to do.
Imperative sentences
usually end with a period but can
occasionally end with an
exclamation point. These
sentences are sometimes referred
to as directives because they
provide direction to whoever is
being addressed.
The imperative is easy to
form. We use the base of the verb
to give directions, instructions,
suggestions, or advice. We also
use it to give direct orders. We
also use kind words such as
please and kindly to give
directions or instructions.
An imperative sentence is
most often used when giving
directions or instructions.
Examples:
Do your homework.
Study your lesson.
Pay attention to your
teacher.
Please pass the papers
forward.
Do not sleep in class.
The imperative is very easy to
form. we simply use the base
form of the verb.
Here are some examples:
Sir down.
Stand in line.
Fill out this form.
To make the imperative negative,
place the words “do not” or
“don’t” in front of the base form
of the verb.
Do not sit down.
Don’t touch that button.
Don’t forget about the
party tonight.
Using the imperative to give
instructions.
Your teacher may use the
imperative when he gives you
instructions at work.
Example:
Work on this project until
lunchtime and then proceed to
your next subject.
Steps:
1. A cookbook uses the
imperative as well, in the
recipes it contains.
2. Measure 1 cup of flour.
3. Put in a medium-sized
bowl.
4. Blend, but don’t over-mix.
An owner’s manual uses the
imperative when it tells you how
to do something.
To change the ink
cartridges in your printer.
1. Open the door indicated
on the diagram.
2. Remove the empty
cartridge.
3. Replace it with a new one.
4. Close the door.
The imperative can be very
forceful when you are angry or
when you are giving a direct
order, such as in the military.
Don’t lie!
Stop talking!
Forward, march!
The imperative can be very
direct and forceful. Sometimes it
does not feel very polite. Here
are some words and expressions
we can add to make it softer and
more polite.
You can add “please”:
Please sit down.
Please don’t make noise.
