1 Preface
This Performance Specification describes the performance aspects, requirements, and test
conditions that the product must meet.
The contents of this performance specification may not be made accessible to third parties
without the express permission of Audi.
2 Objectives
The vehicle’s entire acoustics are contingent on every individual part having the required
acoustic properties. Whenever a change is made to a part, or if new developments are
released, inquiries must be made as to the most recent version of the acoustic requirements
(by I/EG-4) in each case.
The part supplier must verify the required acoustic effect of the part manufactured by them
using the tests specified below. The Acoustics department reserves the right to perform part-
specific tests (e.g., in the installed condition) for the purpose of a release.
Additional requirements, e.g., with regard to design engineering or quality assurance, remain
valid and must be agreed upon with the appropriate department.
The supplier must provide the bill of materials, indicating the individual materials used with
mass per unit area and gross density. Furthermore, the supplier must provide I/EG-4 with
suitable part samples (at least 3 per variant) free of charge prior to build sample approval for
the purpose of release testing.
The materials to be tested must be available 4 weeks prior to the required material release at
the latest. The required material release date is specified in the drawing note or the
Component Performance Specification.
The material supplier must carry out a full test run and present the documentation to the
Acoustics department (I/EG-4) and the part-owning department of Audi AG prior to initial
sample inspection.
The acoustic requirements in the Component Performance Specification are adapted as
needed to meet the requirements for the whole vehicle.
The English translation is believed to be accurate. In case of discrepancies, the German version controls. The decimal sign in
non-editable figures may be a comma or a point on the line. The decimal point is used consistently within the running text.

3 Requirements as part of this Performance Specification
Absorbers may generally consists of porous and fibrous materials.
3.1 General requirements
The following applies in general for all parts in terms of this Performance Specification:
Test methods:
Determining the absorption coefficients for panel material and parts in the alpha
chamber, or a reverberation chamber that is demonstrably equivalent. This is a
standardized measurement procedure with a material specimen size of 1.2 m²
without air space.
The sample panels that are used for tests must match the material structure and thickness of
the finished part. Therefore, a manufacturing process must be used that is as close to
production as possible.
3.2 Absorption:
The absorbing properties (absorption coefficient α) are determined in the alpha chamber at a
frequency range of 400 Hz to 6 300 Hz in one-third octaves. An absorber has met the
requirements when all measured values are above the requirement curve or max. 5
measured values are below the specified values and the sum of deviations of these points
does not exceed the value of 0.25 (which is the equivalent of 25 percentage points).
The dimensions of the sample panels are 1 000 mm x 1 200 mm. Particular attention must
be paid to the dimensional accuracy and the perpendicularity of the sample panels. The
sample panels must be inserted into a frame and the edges must be covered as a result.
The sample panels are placed flat on the floor of the alpha chamber.
The specimen thicknesses and the respective acoustic requirements (requirement curves) are
specified in the respective part drawing.
It can typically be assumed that requirement 3 can be met for a part with 10 mm thickness as
the standard value for material quality, requirement 4 for a part with 15 mm thickness, and
requirement 5 for a part with 20 mm thickness.
The AA_EG-4-16 Messung [Link] Work Instruction must be used.
The English translation is believed to be accurate. In case of discrepancies, the German version controls. The decimal sign in
non-editable figures may be a comma or a point on the line. The decimal point is used consistently within the running text.
