AEE 162: Statics
Spring 2021
Homework 3
1. Solution to this problem must include a FBD.
a) The 25-kg flowerpot is supported at 𝐴 by the three cords. Determine the force acting in
each cord for equilibrium.
b) If each cord can sustain a maximum tension of 50 N before it fails, determine the greatest
weight of the flowerpot the cords can support.
2. Determine the moment of each of the three forces:
a) about point A.
b) about point B.

3. The 20-N horizontal force acts on the handle of the socket wrench. Determine the moment
of this force about point 𝑂. Specify the coordinate direction angles a, b, g of the moment
axis.
Note: Solve this problem using the vector approach, and solve again using the Varignon’s theorem.
4. a) Determine the moment of the force of 𝐹 = 600 N about point 𝐴.
b) Determine the smallest force 𝐹 that must be applied along the rope in order to cause the
curved rod, which has a radius of 4 m, to fail at the support 𝐴. This requires a moment of
𝑀 = 1500 N ⋅ m to be developed at 𝐴.

5. The pipe assembly is subjected to the 80-N force.
a) Determine the moment of this force about point A.
b) Determine the moment of this force about point B.
Note: Solve this problem using the vector approach, and solve again using the Varignon’s theorem.
6. a) Use vector approach and determine the moment of the force 𝐅 about point 𝐴.
b) Determine the magnitude of the moments of the force 𝐅 about the 𝑥, 𝑦, and 𝑧 axes. Solve
the problem (i) using a Cartesian vector approach (i.e., use scalar triple product) and (ii)
using a scalar approach (i.e., Varignon’s theorem).
c) Determine the moment of the force 𝐅 about an axis extending between A and C. Express
the result as a Cartesian vector.
