HOT Questions for Practice
1. A student focussed the image of a candle flame on a white screen using a convex lens. He noted down
the position of a candle, screen, and lens as under:
Position of candle = 12 cm
Position of convex lens = 50 cm
Position of screen = 88 cm
a. What is the focal length of the convex lens?
b. Where will the image be formed if he shifts the candle towards the lens at a position of 31 cm?
c. What will be the nature of the image formed if he further shifts the candle towards the lens?
d. Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of the image in case ‘c’ as said above.
2. Refractive index of diamond with respect to glass is 1.6 and absolute refractive index of glass is 1.5. Find
out the absolute refractive index of diamond.
3. Under what condition in an arrangement of two plane mirrors, incident ray and reflected ray will always
be parallel to each other, whatever maybe the angle of incidence? Show the same with the help of
diagram.
4. An object 50 cm tall is placed on the principal axis of a convex lens. Its 20 cm tall image is formed on the
screen placed at 10 cm from the lens. Calculate the focal length of the lens.
5. For the same angle of incidence in media P, Q and R, the angles of refraction are 35°,25°,15°respectively.
In which medium will the velocity of light be minimum?
6. The near point of a defective eye is 25 cm from the eye. Calculate focal length of the lens required by her
to read a book placed at 20 cm.
7. The far point of a myopic person is 6 m. Calculate the power of the lens he requires for distant vision.
8. With the help of ciliary muscles, the human eye can change its curvature and thus alter the focal length
of its lens. State the changes that occur in the curvature and focal length of the eye lens while viewing
distant objects and nearby objects.
9. Three incandescent bulbs of 100 W each are connected in series in an electric circuit. In another circuit
another set of three bulbs of the same wattage are connected in parallel to the same source.
a. Will the bulbs in the two circuits glow with the same brightness? Justify your answer.
b. Now let one bulb in both the circuits get fused. Will the rest of the bulbs continue to glow in
each circuit? Give reason.
10. A wire of 3 Ω resistance and 10 cm length is stretched to 30 cm length. If it has uniform cross-section,
what will be its new resistance?
11. Water boils in an electric kettle in 15 minutes after being switched on. Using the same mains supply,
should the length of the heating element be increased or decreased if the water is to be boiled in 10
minutes? Why?
12. You are making a snack for you and some friends to help you get ready for a full night of studying. You
decide that coffee, toast and popcorn would be a good start. You turn on the toaster (900 W), place
some popcorn in the microwave (1200 W), and turn it on. Because your apartment is an older building,
the fuse (10 A Rating) may blow when you turn on too many appliances at 220 V.
a. Should you start the coffee maker (600 W)?
b. Check the answer to part (a).
c. If not, suggest an alternative to start the coffee maker.
13. An electrician puts a fuse of rating 5A in the part of the domestic circuit in which electrical heater of
rating 1.5 kW, 220 V is operating. What is likely to happen in the case and why? What change if any
needs to be made?
14. a. Consider a conductor of resistance ‘R’, length ‘L’, thickness ‘d’ and resistivity ‘ρ’. Now this conductor in
cut into four equal parts. What will be the new resistivity of each of the parts? Why?
b. Find the resistance if all these parts are connected in:
i. Parallel
ii. Series
c. Out of these combinations of resistors mentioned above in the previous part, for a given a voltage
which combination will consume more power and why?
15. How will the magnetic field be affected in a straight conductor carrying current on:
a. Increasing the current through the conductor.
b. Changing the direction of flow of current through the conductor?
16. What is the role of each of the three pins in a power plug?
17. Can we use AC for electroplating?
18. Why is alternating current considered to be advantageous over direct current for long distance
transmission of electric energy?
19. What is the nature of magnetic field:
a. Inside a solenoid,
b. Due to a circular coil?
20. It is established that an electric current through a metallic conductor produces a magnetic field around
it. Is there a similar magnetic field produced around a thin beam of moving
a. Alpha particles,
b. Neutrons.
Justify your answer.
