Balanced Forces

Forces can be either balanced or unbalanced. A balanced force occurs when two equal forces push or pull in opposite directions on an object, like a tug of war with equal strength on both sides. An unbalanced force is when one force is larger than the opposing force, which will cause the object to change its speed or direction of motion. The document provides examples of pictures and asks the reader to identify whether the forces shown are balanced or unbalanced, and to describe the outcome.

Name: Date:

A force is balanced when two equal forces push or pull in the opposite direction on the same
object, like a draw in a Tug of War.

An unbalanced force is when one force is larger than the other. The object will then change its
speed or the direction it is moving in.

What to do: Look at the pictures. Decide whether the force is balanced or unbalanced. Write
what will happen in each picture.
