Digitax Troubleshooting Guide

1 Digitax controller overview

General information
● Always shut down a controller prior to removing any of its parts for troubleshooting.
● After loading parameters/software to a controller, the controller restart must be performed to enable the
initialization of the controller with the new parameters/software.
● When resetting a controller to its default parameters, always use parameter 1233. Do not use any other
resetting method or parameter.

NOTE: The HP Indigo is setup to the EUR standard, 1233 is a EUR setup.
1244 is a US setup, do not use this reset parameter because all HP Indigo presses are setup to EUR
configuration.

● The Digitax can be affected by dirt, heat, and software issues.

● Before you replace a Digitax unit, do a baseline verification. Follow the steps in Baselining the Digitax
on page 14.

DC Bus paralleling — Why connect DC buses together?

In applications where regenerative energy is present for significant periods of time, on one or more drives, it is
possible to recycle this current via the DC bus to another drive with is in the motoring condition. This improves
the efficiency of the system since the regenerated energy is not wasted in braking resistors and the motoring
drive draws substantially less power from the mains. This can be particularly advantageous where one or more
drives may be “holding back: a line to provide tension. It is often applied in high performance servo applications
where substantial amounts of energy are used in accelerating and braking drives.

CA393-06451 Rev 08 General information 1

Digitax Troubleshooting Guide

Figure 1-2 Example of a winder/unwind solution

Another reason can be to save cost in an application where several drives can share a single braking resistor due
to differing regenerative duty cycles between drives.
As well as offering advantages in terms of simplifying energy management, a common DC bus system also has
the potential to simplify the mains connections and protection, as usually, only a single mains feed is needed.
In summary, the advantages are:
● Reduction of energy losses (heat loss from braking resistors)
● Reduce cubicle size
● Reduced input stage systems cost (reduced AC input cabling, AC input fuses, contacts, etc.)
● Common braking solutions
The driver (Digitax) power supply is DC BUS power.
The CBS driver power is CD power 48 VDC.

AC power:
● In HP Indigo WS6000 Series Digital Presses, three drivers are connected to the AC supply (IBS1, IBS2, FR,)
and feed the DC BUS supply to other drivers.
● The FB driver (in the ILP) does not feed on the DC bus power, but has separate AC power.

DC power:
● DC BUS voltage can be read at parameter 5.05 and the value should be at the range of ~560V DC.

NOTE: The DC power may increase over ~560 V DC during printing. This can be caused by faulty fuse on
FR, IBS2, or IBS. This will eventually cause the press status to change to Off.

● The Digitax unit does not have the ability to identify if 1 or 2 of the AC phases are missing.
● The Digitax unit does not have the ability to identify if the DC bus output supply is damaged.
When a driver AC fuse or DC fuse that is connected to AC is damaged, the press will continue to work with the
damaged fuse, and the DC power is reduced. Therefore, when you replace the Digitax, verify that all AC and DC
fuses are okay.
Fuses
There are three options so supply power to the driver:

2 Chapter 1 Digitax controller overview CA393-06451 Rev 08

Digitax Troubleshooting Guide

● AC power
● CD power 48 VDC
● DC BUS power
On web presses:
● IBS1, IBS2, and Feed are connected to AC via an AC fuse.
● BCS is connected to +48VDC.
● All drivers (not include BCS) are connected to the DC via DCBUS fuse.
There is no indication that DC fuse are damaged. Therefore, manual inspection is required.
After replacing the Digitax, verify that all AC and DC fuses are OK (0 ohm). In addition, verify that the breaking
resistor is installed.
Manual inspection is required to verify that a breaking resistor is installed since there is no indication that
breaking resistor is installed at drives FI and FB.

Profibus
Profibus is a communication protocol based on 485 HW. The PLC CPU (Siemens) establishes communication with
all the Control techniques driver via an additional SM application module Profibus (purple) and the data is
transferred between the PLC CPU and diver FI.
To diagnose the Profibus, read the following parameters:

Parameter Parameter description Value

16.03 Fieldbus Node Address 55 (this is the address through which the
PLC communicates with the Digitax (FI))

16.04 Fieldbus Baud Rate 3 (communication rate of 3MB/s)

Figure 1-13 Setting up the Crevis I/O module profibus address

Crevis I/O module in ILP

In older ILP configurations with either the old or new Siemens I/O modules, there are 3 X Siemens I/O modules
U8, U9, U10. Each has 16In/16Out.
All 3 modules (including the corona) are connected using a chain of profibus cable (4 nodes): 13 spare inputs, 12
spare outputs.
The profibus line arriving from the press to the ILP connects to I/O module U8, continues to route through U10
and U9, and then connects with another profibus cable to the UW I/O module.

CA393-06451 Rev 08 General information 11

Digitax Troubleshooting Guide

In the new ILP configuration, the 3 X Siemens I/O modules are removed and replaced by 1 new remote I/O base
(Crevis) with 2 in and 2 out modules (x8 each).
To the base module, 3 input module (0960-3592), 2 output Sink module (0960-3589), 1 output Source module
(0960-3591) are added (connected).
The chain profibus cable is now replaced with a new profibus cable without chain connections (CA361-31690), 7
spare inputs, 7 spare output, 1 spare inverted output.

The profibus line arriving from the press to the ILP connects to I/O module U14, continues directly to the UW I/O
module without any profibus chain (as in the old configuration).

Digitax FB change on new ILP with Crevis

In older ILP configurations, the Digitax FB contained 2 X SM_IO_LITE modules.

NOTE: In the old configuration, Digitax FB uses AO1 (pin 9) for the corona. With the new configuration, the
corona does not need the signal provided from pin 9. Pin 9 on the Digitax is now used for the I2P controller.

In the new configuration, one module is removed (slot2), with the module in slot 1 remaining. The analog output
from slot 2 (I2P) was moved to the FB pin 9 (in the new WHS software, the software knows that the module is
not there and looks at pin 9 at the FB.

Initial steps for troubleshooting controller trip errors

1. Make sure that you have an ohmmeter on-site.
2. Check if all interlocks are closed. Check if all doors and guards are closed. Only use a bypass key for
verification.
3. Check the substrate definitions: ILP set up and tension (too much tension can trigger an error).
4. Check the substrate threading.
5. Check if the unwinder and IBS buffers have been cleaned lately.
6. Check if all of the sensors have been cleaned lately.
7. Slowly inspect all of the WHS components, such as Digitax, WHS motors, electrical cabinet, etc. Check if any
wires are loose or not connected.
8. Depending on the error type, bypass the ILP (if it is installed). Check if the error disappears.
9. Look at all of the I/O modules and the PLC. Check if there are any red LEDs. Check if all of the LEDs are
green.
10. Check the addresses of the I/O modules.
11. Make sure that the terminations on the profibus cables are positioned correctly.
12. Check if WHS belts, bearings, connectors, etc. are loose. Loose WHS components can trigger an error.
13. Make sure that the fans in the electrical cabinet turn in the correct direction to blown air out of the electrical
cabinet.
14. Check that the filters on the electrical cabinet door are not clogged.
15. Verify that the electrical cabinet is not dirty. Dust and dirt cause Digitax failures.

2 Troubleshooting controller trip errors

NOTE: When experiencing multiple Digitax failures, they might be related to a main power instability. Besides
the troubleshooting procedures suggested below, see also the Emerson Harmonics document at:
http://www.onxcontrol.com/files/A%20guide%20to%20Supply%20Harmonics%20and%20other%20low
%20frequency%20disturbances.pdf
It is recommended to have an external professional company check the stability of the site power that is
provided to the press. A stabilizer or UPS might need to be installed.

Tune E1

Braking resistor thermistor temperature monitoring fail
If a brake resistor is installed:
● Ensure that the braking resistor thermistor is connected correctly to the FI/FR and FB controllers.
● Ensure that the fan in the drive is working correctly.
● Reload the controller software and restart the WHS system.
● Check the resistors actual resistance using a DVM, should be at 70 Ohm.
Figure 2-1 Braking resistor wiring

● Shut down the controller.

● Replace the braking resistor
● When this error message appears on any of the Digitax unidrives (other than FI), set pararameter 10.37 to
8. (Parameter 10.37 for the FI unidrive can be either 8 or 0. Do not change the parameter value on the FI
unidrive when receiving this error.) (Parameter 10.37 for the FB unidrive is always 8 so there is no need to
change the value when receiving this error.)
● Changing the value of parameter 10.37 to 8 eliminates this error message.

Digitax Troubleshooting Guide

3 Smartcards

Defining new smartcards – safe motor speed limit using Digitax base
parameters
Each of the unidrives FP, IBS1, IBS2, FI, FE, IP, FB, and Feed must switch individually to a safe speed limit if the
digital input signal is low. However, if the digital input signal is high, then the full speed limit is permitted. When
an actual motor speed exceeds the value set in the parameter 1.06, the Unidrive trips with an over speed error.
This is also applies when the parameter 6.15 is set to 0, and the Unidrive disabled. If the disabled Unidrive roller
is rotated by the web, or an operator, it may easily exceed the safe speed limit for a short time, causing the
Unidrive to trip. To prevent this, the Unidrive should allow the high speed limit, if disabled.
The Digitax manufacturer has changed the software version of the Digitax without changing the part numbers of
the units. When replacing the Digitax unit, it is important to verify the software version of the unit. The software
version is located in parameter 0.50 of the Digitax. The software versions require different safety parameters as
indicated below. It is important to note the software version of a newly installed Digitax unit in order to install the
correct safety parameters.

IMPORTANT: The old set of safety parameter values cannot be installed on a new type Digitax with software
version 1.07. The new set of safety parameter values can be installed on all types of Digitax (with software
versions 1.07, 1.06, or 1.02).
If any of the safety parameters needs to be replaced, erase all the parameter values and load each parameter
value one by one.

Effect of the Safety Parameters

The safety parameters control the speed of the web handling system when the interlock line has been breached.
In normal operation mode, the speed value of the web handling system will be 3000 for presses with the Digitax
version 1.06 and 3001.9 for presses with the Digitax version 1.07. When an interlock line is breached and the
safety mode is activated, the speed values change as shown below:
Table 3-1 Web handling system speed in safety mode (for WHS software versions earlier than 6803)

Parameter Speed (rpm)

Digitax software FP IBS-1 IBS-2 FI FE IP FR (FEED) FB

version

1.06 76 120 120 152 152 120 108 180

1.07 77 122.1 122.1 152.9 152.9 122.1 110.5 182.6

Speed limit calculation for the Digitax

The speed limit input is an analog input of 24 VDC to the Digitax. The voltage changes with the parameters in
each drive.
When the parameters are set correctly and pin 25 is at 24 VDC, the Digitax parameter 1.06 will have a speed of
3000. When pin 25 is at 0 VDC, the Digitax parameter 1.06 will have a speed of 120.

46 Chapter 3 Smartcards CA393-06451 Rev 08

Digitax Troubleshooting Guide

When the parameters are not set correctly and pin 25 is at 24 VDC, the Digitax parameter 1.06 will have the
speed value set to 412.5. When pin 25 is at 0 VDC, the Digitax parameter 1.06 will have the speed value set to
16.5.
In order to check the speeds, close all the press doors and run the WEB feed. Check the values on the Digitax for
parameter 1.06. Open a press door and check the values for parameter 1.06.
Verifying the software version of the Digitax
In order to verify the software version of your Digitax controller, scroll to parameter 0.50. If the reading is 106
then the software version is 1.06. If the reading is 107 then the software version is 1.07.
Installing a new press
When installing a new press, there is no need to check the Digitax parameters. All new presses are supplied with
the latest software version for the installed Digitax.
Loading new safety parameters
When a Digitax controller fails and is replaced, enter the safety parameters for software version 1.07.
Do not use the smart card from the removed Digitax to load the parameters onto the new Digitax. Enter the new
safety parameters manually.

NOTE: When new parameters have been loaded to a Digitax unidrive, it is necessary to “teach” the values to the
new smart card. Follow the procedures for teaching the smart card given above: Programming and booting from
the smartcard on page 25 and: To boot the Unidrive from the smartcard on press start up: on page 26

To check that the speeds have changed, perform a web feed with all doors closed and then do another web feed
with a door open. The values will be different.

Digitax Troubleshooting Guide

New safety parameters

IMPORTANT: If the press has a WHS software version earlier than 6803 installed and you are about to install
WHS software v6803, the Digitax needs to be reset, after which the new safety parameters are to be added to
each relevant Digitax. Refer to this document, to CA393-00600 – WHS Electronics, and to CA393-08630 – Web
Handling System Software Remote Installation.
If the press has WHS software v6803 installed and you are about to install the new WHS software v6805, there
is no need to reset the Digitax. Just install the new WHS software.

A new set of safety parameters were released as part of the Digitax inner 1.07 firmware. They replace the
existing parameters mentioned above. The release of the new set of parameters is related to the large amount
of WHS errors that appear during the booting up of the press. This is not a case of a new error, bug, or machine
down. It is mostly a TCE issue that customers might face. Whenever a press starts up, there are always WHS
errors during the boot process, which the operator clears from the screen. The issue here is that there were
more errors that needed to be cleared.

Digitax Troubleshooting Guide

Guidelines for the new safety parameter values

● The new safety parameter values apply to the following Digitax units: FP, IBS1, IBS2, FI, FE, IP, FEED, and
FB.
● The new safety parameter values apply to all HP Indigo WS6X00 and W72X0 Digital Presses, including both
types of ILPs (industrial and commercial).
● It is not mandatory to update the new set of safety parameters. However, if the customer complains about
symptoms for which the new parameter values would help, update the parameter values.
● If a specific Digitax fails (and needs to be replaced), install the Digitax and load the new safety parameter
values in the replaced Digitax. It is irrelevant which safety parameter values are in the other Digitax units.
● If the new safety parameter values are loaded into one Digitax, there is no need to update them in any
other Digitax. The result is that it is possible for a press to have some Digitax with old values and some with
new values.
● The new safety parameter values can be loaded into all the Digitax units even though it is not necessary.
● The old safety parameter values are not relevant anymore. Do not use them.
● The software version of the Digitax is located in parameter 0.50.
– Version 106 and lower have the old safety parameters installed as part of the firmware.
– Version 107 and higher have the new safety parameters installed as part of the firmware.
● When a new press is installed, nothing needs to be done regarding the safety parameters because the
production line updates the relevant Digitax with the necessary values.
● If there is a large amount of WHS errors (as described above) when the press boots, replace all the safety
parameter values.
● Do not use the SmartCard from the removed Digitax for the new Digitax.
● After the new set of parameter values are entered manually, teach the SmartCard to read the Digitax new
parameters.
● If old parameter values are loaded into a new type of Digitax, the WHS loses tension while trying to print,
and/or Digitax IBS1 and IBS2 trip due to an overspeed error.

Digitax Troubleshooting Guide

Before installing WHS software v6803 or v6805

IMPORTANT: When installing WHS software version 6803 or 6805, do the following before installing the
software.

Automatically loading safety parameters

IMPORTANT: When you install WHS software version 6803 or 6805, it is very important that you follow the
following loading process steps 1 - 3. Review the instructions before you start. Make sure you how the loading
process should be performed.
IMPORTANT: Turn off the press software before starting this procedure. Otherwise the Digitax units will not
reset.

Because the procedure of entering the safety parameters will be done when the software is loaded to the Digitax
units, all of the units need to be reset (erased), as follows:
1. Do these steps for FI, FP, FR, IP, IBS1, IBS2, FB, and FE (leave the FE for the last, to minimize the
appearance of trip code errors). Do not do these steps for BCS, UW, and RW:
a. For parameter xx.00, type 9999 and press the red button. This resets the smart card.
b. For parameter xx.00, type 1233 and press the red button. This resets the Digitax parameter.

NOTE: Make sure that the drive trip is shown, and you hear a click from the drive. If not, repeat 1233
again until a trip is shown and you hear a click.
NOTE: The trip br.th is normal at this point and can be ignored / FI tripped EnC2.
NOTE: Trip 154: “Wrong CT-Net node (#17.23 does not match with software loaded on
SM_Application)”. This error could happen if the software is still loaded onto the controller.

c. For parameter 17.23, confirm that parameter 17.23 (Node ID) has been reset to 0. If the parameter
shows a number other than 0, repeat step b.
d. Update 17.23 to the correct node ID, and press the red button.

● For parameter 16.11, type 168, and press the red button.
● For parameter 16.12, type 101, and press the red button.
● For parameter 16.13, type 12, and press the red button.
● For parameter 16.37, change to ON, and press the red button.
2. Continue loading the software as usual using Winflash.

NOTE: If the error “Node Not Found” appears, reset CB21 for 15 seconds to restart the drive. Then
confirm that the node is 5, the IP is 192.168.101.12, and 16.37 is ON. Ping 192.168.101.12 to ensure
communication works. If not resolved, repeat steps a - d.

3. For parameter xx.00, type 1000. For BCS, type 1001. Press the red button. This saves the parameters.
4. Restart all drives, Reset CB21 for 15 seconds.
5. Confirm that 17.23 (Node ID) and 19.29 (WHS Version) are correct.

NOTE: If the BCS Digitax was reprogrammed, run the autotune. Follow the instructions in BCS Interactive
Troubleshooting Guide (CA393-07960).
NOTE: If the unwinder Digitax was reprogrammed, confirm that the unwind direction is correct.
NOTE: If the rewinder Digitax was reprogrammed, calibrate the roll diameter and dancer roller.

Manually loading safety parameters

NOTE: The Digitax software and safety parameters are loaded automatically as part of the v6803 or 6805
software.
NOTE: The smartcard is not needed after the software v6803 or v6805 is installed.
IMPORTANT: If the safety parameters are loaded manually, do it on all the Digitax units. Do not skip any unit.
Do not replace only some of the parameters – instead, erase all the parameters and load each parameter, one
by one, according to Table 3-2 New safety parameters for Digitax software version 1.07 on page 48.
