Dear Parents/ Carers
Thank you to our whole school community for what has been an excellent half term at
RVHS! This term has been an extremely busy one when it comes to PPE examinations
0pts and we all know how crucial this time is for our students in Year 11 and 13 in particular.

Not only has this term been a productive one when it comes to progress, but we have also
had lots of trips, experiences and extra-curricular events at Roding Valley. Our excellent
Drama Team and 6th form production team produced an outstanding show for us; with its
finale being this evening! I was absolutely in awe of all of the students that gave it their all
and have also been informed by our Drama staff that our 6th formers put a tremendous
amount of work into making this show happen. A huge thank you to the whole Creative

thank the parents of those involved, who have spent hours of their own time dropping and
collecting the students from school for out of hours rehearsals and preparation, and for
everyone who has or will attend the show. It means so much to our students to have that
support and see a full house each night after months of dedication.
On Wednesday I had the pleasure of meeting with the Student Voice team. Student Voice

previous years they have had a significant impact on the school, for example they were
fundamental in the purchase of new water fountains across the school site. This week
they brought a ‘wish list’ of things they would like to see happen across the school,
ranging from requests linked to the snacks we sell, to looking at how we report progress to
parents. For each request that had a clear rationale, pros and cons and most importantly,
solutions! Some of these we will be able to implement immediately, and others will need

the same day they met with Mr Smith - Deputy Headteacher- and discussed our school
site and how students feel in different parts of the school. It’s important that all students
feel safe as they move around our large school site, so on Wednesday they completed an
exercise using maps, highlighter pens and lots of discussion, to speak candidly about
where they feel more staff presence at certain times is needed.
.
As a result of this, we have created a Hot Spot rota, where staff will be present during lesson
transitions, break and lunch duties to ensure that there is a presence. We hope that this change will
make a big difference to those students, particularly in younger years, about how safe they feel on a
day to day basis.
It’s also an appropriate time, at the end of half term, to remind all pupils and families that punctuality
to school and to all lessons is a top priority at RVHS. After half term we will be recognising
outstanding punctuality with rewards and achievement points, but we will also be tightening up our
sanctions for lateness to school in the mornings and lateness to lessons. Please speak with your child
about the importance of punctuality after half term. Link to changes regarding punctuality letter can
be found here. One of the keys to success will be all students arriving at school by 8.30am. For the
majority, this is already the case, but for some they will need to reconsider their morning routines to
ensure that they get in a few minutes earlier. We are also developing stronger partnerships with other
schools in the CLP Trust, and will be working very closely with one secondary school to help develop
our rewards and positive recognition policy. We have so many wonderful, hard-working and dedicated
students whose success should be acknowledged and celebrated more frequently.
Lastly, I wanted to thank members of my staff team for giving up their holiday to accompany many of
our students on the two abroad trips that are taking place over the February half term. Special thanks
to Mr Ifrim for coordinating our Ski trip to Andorra for 75 of our students and to Mr Rahman for
coordinating the Disneyland Paris Trip to over 80 students. I’m sure that a fantastic time will be had
by all, and I look forward to seeing some photographs and hearing stories upon their return. We wish
them a safe journey and hope that they have a wonderful time.
Best wishes

Messages from Our Year Progress
Leaders
Our team is proud to be your child’s Year Progress Leader and very much looking forward to supporting your
child and with such a great cohort of students, we are sure it will be a great half term. To ensure that you are
aware of who your child’s Year Progress Leader is and who to contact, please refer to their details below:
Year 7: Ms Hegerty
To contact Ms Hegerty, please email [email protected]
Year 9: Mr Ryan
To contact Mr Ryan, please email [email protected]
Please can Year 7 ensure that they are fully prepared for learning with all the equipment they need
for lessons and that they always have a reading book with them for DEAR time. We still are limited
with the catering facilities we have available at RVHS so we do encourage all students that are able
to, to bring a packed lunch to avoid lengthy queues at break and lunchtimes (Year 7 are still able to
purchase food in Zone 3 at these times).
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Olivia J 7Li, Oscar S 7Li, Harry K 7Pl and Keya
V 7Li who received the highest amount of ARE points last week - well done and thank you for being
such great examples for your peers!
Congratulations to our Bedrock Stars of last week who have put in significant time and effort to their
digital literacy curriculum - a big well done to Martin D 7Li and Bethany C 7Pl!
Finally, a reminder to keep completing your Reading Passports and Literacy WoW Passports that will
go into a prize draw at the end of term! I wish you a restful half term with your families and look
forward to seeing you later in February!
Firstly, students returned after the Christmas Break and have sat their assessments.
Students worked really hard towards these and it is great to hear about lots of fantastic
results. You should have now received their school report this week. If you are concerned with anything
on your son/daughter’s school report, parents are recommended to contact the subject teacher as they
will be able to provide the most detailed and valuable information. All teachers email addresses can be
found on the school website here.
Last week, the year 8 students took part in a House football tournament at lunchtime which was great to
see. The students got fully involved and it was great to see some healthy competition.
I had the pleasure of attending the Mary Poppins school production last night which was fantastic. It was
great to see so many Year 8 students’ part of it. Special mentions to Leila M, Phoebe G and Ruby F.
Finally, I wish everyone a restful half term and look forward to seeing the students back in school on

Year 9 News
Message from Mr Ryan
We are now exactly halfway through the academic year. It really is hard to believe how
quickly this half term has gone. It was lovely to see so many parents and students at
our Options Information Evening. During the evening different subjects showed what
they had to offer and students and parents were able to speak to these teachers
and see whether or not they were suitable. Ms Larkin explained the pathways system
and why they are so successful. She also explained about the application that we are using to process the
options. If you haven't received these emails please let me know. We know that there are some students
who may have one or two issues with their pathway, what we would ask is that you email me (in the first
instance) and then you will be sent information about our Options Clinics. The deadline for the options to be
made is the 8th March.
I know that there are a number of Year 9’s going on the ski trip over the half term break. I wish them all the
best and hope that they return safely and in one piece!
Our Bedrock Champion was the same person for two weeks in a row. Congratulations to Andrei B 9Ox.
In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children
from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant
registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley
High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the
burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more
information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website.
It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional
funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to
meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention
groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you
believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our
Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be
emailed to [email protected]
Year 10 News
Message from Mrs Wills
It has been a very quick half term, but a busy one and I think we are all looking forward
to the break. The glimpses of spring on the sunny days and the lighter evenings show
us that the year is moving quickly and with that our Year 10’s are half way into their
GCSE courses.
As I said previously, and as you will have read in the letter from Mr Smith, we are really focussing on
improving student’s punctuality to school and lessons. Your support in this is greatly appreciated. I will
be running a punctuality competition for the month after half term, with rewards for the students who
have the best attendance and punctuality.
Finally, well done to all those students who took part in Mary Poppins. Year 10 are a wonderful group of
students, very involved in Drama and it is great to see so many working hard both on and off the stage.

Year 11 News
Message from Miss Pinches
I wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate Year 11 on their exceptional effort during
these two weeks of PPE’s. The majority of the exams are now complete, with only 1 day of
cohort exams after the February half term (please see the arrangements below).
Tuesday 27th Feb This is a normal school day, all students attend 8:30am-3:00pm.
There are no scheduled exams.
Wednesday 28th Feb Student only come onto the school site for their scheduled exams:
• Students arrive at normal time – 8:30am
• Students will have an extended break in between the two exams
• All students will leave the site after the afternoon exam
Thursday 29th Feb & All exams complete, students back in normal lessons as timetabled
onwards
I want to take the opportunity to remind parents and students of our punctuality policy. We expect all
students to be in school on time, every day. The gates open at 8:15am with the expectation that all
students are in their Period 1 lesson by 8:30am.
As a cohort, we are still struggling to be in our lessons on time. With GCSE exams very quickly
approaching, we need to be making the most of every lesson, every minute. We will be monitoring
punctuality closely and placing students on punctuality report if there is a concern about consistent
punctuality issues. This really needs to be a team effort from students, parents and staff to ensure the
effectiveness of our lessons and revision time over the next half term.
Media 10
Last week Media 10 came for Employer
Tuesday! They shared so much information
about working at Media 10 in Loughton and the
opportunities they offer for work experience
and apprenticeships. We have several alumni
students already working at Media 10, they are
so supportive of Roding Valley and the work
experience event on February 20th is not to be
missed! Details are on the weekly bulletin.

After 4 months of intense rehearsals, the cast and crew of Mary Poppins Jr
finally presented their show to two excited audiences. The matinee
performance on Wednesday was to Years 5 and 6 of Alderton Primary School,
and it was terrific to see the cast find their feet and confidence in front of an
enthusiastic audience. Later that night the show opened properly, to family and
friends, with the biggest opening night audience we have ever seen at our
school productions. It's great to see the school shows going from strength to
strength, building on the success of previous years. Lest we forget, most of the
amazing work you see, on stage, off stage, on the set and with the costumes,
is led by students. A massive congratulations to the sixth form production
team, with special mention to Ruby C (Y13) who has directed this year's show
with tireless positivity and enthusiasm, and an honourable mention to Eve M
(Y9) who created so many professional looking props.
This week we played around with static electricity. We had
students hold on to a Van de Graaff generator (a metal sphere
that’s charged by a moving band) to charge their bodies with
electrons, and then discharge it by bringing their finger close to
someone else’s, which creates a small shock as the electrons
jump the gap through the air between the two fingers and go
through the second person and into the ground. You only feel the
shock at the contact point, and because of the very low current
it’s perfectly safe.
We are also asking for any unwanted good condition used uniform to be donated to school.
If you have any spare items at home please do send them into school after emptying all pockets and
laundered, with your child to be dropped off at student reception.
Old PE Kit
If any parents/carers have any old RVHS PE kit which their child has outgrown even if it has a name or
initials embroidered on it, the PE Department would be more than happy to take this off your hands and use
it as a spare kit for students.
Also, the PE department is looking for any donations of outgrown trainers and or football boots that we can
add to our spare kit collection.
Thanks in advance for your support.
Over the last two weeks, we have been encouraging students to apply for
the role of Epping Forest Youth Council. By all accounts, we have
the highest number of applications ever (15 students at the time of
writing!). In the week after half term these students will be presenting their
campaigns to the school and on Friday 1st March 2024 Roding Valley will
go to the polls to decide who best represents them.
The role of Youth Councillor is a two-year commitment and an opportunity to become more involved in the
community, the successful candidate will meet all sorts of people and attend high profile events. The work that
the youth Councillors do can count towards Duke of Edinburgh community work.
➢ Sydnae-Rose S
➢ Ahiyan K
➢ Eylul U
They came to give information and advice to the whole school community last week. They are also up for a
variety of awards themselves!
Sydnae-Rose is a finalist for the Young Citizen of the Year 2024 award, the results will be announced at the
Chairmans Civic Awards ceremony on 15th March at the Marriot Hotel. Sydnae was nominated for her
volunteering work with numerous community groups, including the 3rd Waltham Abbey Beaver Scouts Group,
the Trussell Trust foodbank in Loughton, and has served as an Epping Forest Youth Councillor for four years.
Eylul and Ahiyan will also be attending this with Sydnae, as they will each receive a certificate of achievement
for their outstanding work as Youth Councillor’s for 2022- 2024. Certificates will be presented by the Chairman
of Epping Forest district Council
Ahiyan and Eylul have both received Jack Petchey awards in 2023 for their community work as Youth
Councillors. Sydnae-Rose received a Jack Petchey award in 2022 for her community work as Youth
Councillors.
Eylul will be representing the Epping Forest Youth Council at the Jack Petchey 25th Anniversary event at City
Hall, in London on Friday 16th February she will be attending with fellow Youth Councillor from Chigwell
School.

Who to contact
Should you have any concerns about your child’s attendance or punctuality
please contact your child’s Year Progress Leader or our Attendance Officer
Ms A Parsley ([email protected])
Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and
1 what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the
basics of the site or app.
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new
apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to
2 talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever
worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they
can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This
includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or
3 other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw
a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might
4 happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with
others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or
5 share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they
should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband
6 and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use
parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s
7 natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are
more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a
positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate
information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming
8 or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a
specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites
The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats
about online safety.
You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.
If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people
can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
