INTRODUCTION

A Craft Tourism Village is a designated area where tourists can experience

traditional crafts first-hand. These villages are typically home to a community
of artisans who specialize in creating unique and beautiful handmade products.
Visitors can watch the artisans at work, learn about the traditional techniques
used, and even try their hand at making their own crafts.

It is a great way to experience a different side of a destination and support

local communities. They offer a unique opportunity to learn about traditional
crafts, meet the artisans who make them, and purchase beautiful handmade
products.

AIM OF PROJECT
The objective of the project is to provide following things:

Working artisan studios: Visitors can watch artisans create their crafts in their
studios, which are often open to the public. This provides a unique opportunity
to see traditional skills being passed down from generation to generation.

Craft demonstrations and workshops: Craft tourism village can offer

demonstrations and workshops where visitors can learn about the different
crafts and even try their hand at making their own. This is a great way to get a
deeper understanding of the culture and heritage of the region.

Shops and galleries: Visitors can purchase locally made crafts as souvenirs or
gifts. This is a great way to support the artisans and take a piece of the village
home with you.

Cultural experiences: Craft tourism villages also offer other cultural

experiences, such as traditional music and dance performances, cooking
classes, and visits to local historical sites. This helps to give visitors a well-
rounded understanding of the local culture.
BACKGROUND STUDY

KARNATAKA TOURISM PROPOSAL

Anegundi was chosen for its proximity to Hampi, which is a World Heritage
Site, recognised by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation). This gives tourists an opportunity to explore craft tourism along
with historical tourism.

Karnataka’s first Craft Tourism Village is expected to be opened in a few

months in Anegundi at Koppal district. Karnataka State Handicrafts Corporation
(KSHDC) is the in-charge of implementing the project and has taken measures
to speed up the process.

THE INITIATIVE – PROVIDING HELP TO ARTISANS

The main objective of this project is the renovation and beautification of the
houses of artisans, the streets and restoration of some ancient structures in
the village. This is being done on a priority basis and free of cost for the
artisans. The Tourism Department might also benefit from this as a major part
of craft tourism includes tourists being able to see how traditional handicrafts
are being made.

SCOPE OF PROJECT

Location: Anegundi being 19km away from Hampi has good tourist
infrastructure throughout year.

• Place for backpackers, climbers [ to explore more than ancient

monuments of Hampi]
• Hippie’s Island or Hampi’s Island – demolished by supreme court due to
denied rights of particular land. Lead to downfall of local businesses
around Hampi

Crafts: Available Crafts in and around Anegundi includes –

1. Stone Artefacts –
Handcrafted stone artefacts which are either figurines of gods or replicas of
the Hampi ruins are quite a common sight. Though slightly heavy (because
of the stone), these are small in size and not very expensive either. The oil
lamps, and figures of Nandi, Ganesh and Shiva Linga are quite popular.

2. Lambani Embroidery –

Several Lambani women make bags, jewellery, trinkets, belts and patches in
several corners. The fabric is brightly coloured and infused with metal bells,
mirrors and antique-coin lookalikes. They are hand-embroidered with brightly
coloured threads and patched together.

3. Leather Crafts –

You get leather bags, leather puppets, leather footwear and other leather
accessories at Hampi. Most of this stuff is handmade and just the right size for
a traveller to pack into their bags.

4. Banana Fibre Crafts –

Anegundi is also known for banana fibre crafts. Banana is a popular crop of this
region, and the fibre extracted from the plant could be made into amazing
handicrafts. They include pen stands, bags, baskets and cushion covers.
Amenities: Depending on the location, the village may offer hiking, biking,
birdwatching, or other outdoor activities.

 Performance spaces: Amphitheatres, courtyards, or other designated areas can

host cultural performances, workshops, or community events.
 Accommodation: Homestays, guesthouses, or small hotels can provide visitors
with an authentic experience of village life.
 Restaurants and cafes: These can serve local cuisine and offer opportunities for
interaction between visitors and locals.
