Treasure Hunt Reading
Treasure Hunt Reading
READING
-PROGRAM COMPONENTS-
In order to participate in the Treasure Hunt Reading (THR)
program, your student will need:
1. THR workbook
2. Access to the videos found at [Link]
3. A patient and helpful human who can already read!
-BASE CAMP-
Before starting the program, each student needs to watch the videos
in the “Base Camp” section. Please help your students navigate to
[Link] and find the Base Camp videos. Please do
these lessons with your students. For beginning readers, these will be
new concepts and skills. For more advanced readers, it will be review.
Pay particular attention to lesson 5: Phonemic Awareness. If students
struggle with these activities, even beginning reading will be difficult
for them. Students are typically “ready to read” when they are able
to “mystery word” (or blend) 3 sounds together. This skill will develop
over time as they progress through Journey #|.
-PROGRAM COMPONENTS-
Make sure you check out the resources in the back of your student’s
workbook. Here you will find helpful word lists, activities, and games to
help reinforce your student’s learning. Also, check out the “For Helpful
Adults” section on [Link]. There are many videos
that will help you learn more about literacy and how to work with your
students!
-GETTING STARTED-
This is a self-paced, mastery-based program designed to fill learning
gaps and help each child progress along a systematic path to reading
and writing.
Depending on skill level, students may start the program at various
places.
o Journey #| covers consonants and short vowels, writing letters,
and blending consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words. Students
who are new to reading or are not able to read CVC words
should start at the beginning of Journey #|.
o Journey #2 covers beginning two-letter phonograms, long vowels,
some of the basic rules of reading, and beginning sight words.
Students who know the letters/sounds and can already read CVC
words easily should start at the beginning of Journey #2.
o Journey #3 covers advanced phonograms, more sight words, and
multisyllabic words. Students who are already able to read simple
texts should start at the beginning of Journey #3.
Mastery: As students progress through this program, helpful adults
should frequently check for mastery of each new concept. Each page
has a mastery check stop sign that you should initial when the student
has demonstrated mastery. If you notice that a student needs more
practice with a sight word, rule, or phonogram, do not allow them to
move on until you feel they have mastered that skill. You can find ideas
for practice games, activities, and helpful word lists in the back of this
workbook!
Flexibility: As the Helpful Adult, you may adapt any portion of this
program to fit the needs of each learner. There is not a set pace or
schedule for learning! Take as long as your students need to master
and apply these new skills. Have fun!

4 VOWELS
When we read, we usually say the sounds of the letters, not their
names. However, there are 5 special letters that can say their
names! These letters are called “vowels.” All the other letters are
called “consonants.” There is a vowel in every word!
VIDEO
5 SOUND GAMES
Before you can be a strong reader, your ears and your brain need to
practice hearing the sounds in each word. Great news! You don’t even
need to know the alphabet to practice this!

PART
32 LONG WORDS 1
Just because a word is long doesn’t mean it’s “hard.”
Lots of words can be sounded out just by saying the sounds.
You can also learn to see word parts and syllables that can help
you break apart long words!
VIDEO
33 PUNCTUATION
2
Now that you know all the letters and their sounds, you are
ready to read! Before you can really understand what is
happening in a story, you need to know a little something about
punctuation marks. Punctuation is another part of the “code” we
are trying to figure out.
THE PERIOD
A small dot after the last word in a sentence.
It sits on the “water line.”
.
!
THE EXCLAMATION POINT
A period with a vertical line over it at the end of a
sentence. It tells us that someone is excited or yelling!
Start on the “sky line,” draw down to the “water line”
and add a dot.

YOU HAVE UNLOCKED YOUR BOOKSHELF!
To color in a book on your map page, you need to read each story

you read it. Remember, the Treasure Hunt illustrator was captured
by pirates before she finished drawing the pictures to these stories,
so it is up to you to draw pictures that match the stories!

68 CONGRATULATIONS!
With the reading knowledge you now have, you will be able to read
real books! You will still find words and letter teams that you don’t
know, but you can go a long way on what you know now. That’s
exciting! Here’s an idea: if you have a flashlight, maybe you could
spend some time reading before you go to sleep!

PART
69 LONG WORDS 2
You already know how to look for vowels and break long words up into
syllables, but there’s another little trick to figuring out long words. As
you read longer words, you will start to notice certain little word parts
that show up a lot. These are called prefixes and suffixes. That’s just
fancy talk for word beginnings and endings. Let’s learn a few now!

-EASY-TO-MAKE PRACTICE GAMES-
CRAFT STICK PICK
Materials: jumbo craft sticks, a cup
Write whatever letters or letter teams your students are learning on
the end of some jumbo craft sticks. Write the vowels in a different color
than the rest of the letters. These are the “bad guys.” They make you
lose all your points (you could also draw a black dot on 5 different sticks
instead of using the vowels). Place the sticks in a cup with the letter side
down. The students take turns drawing sticks one at a time. They say the
sound(s) of the letter each time they draw a stick. When they draw a
bad guy, they count their sticks and remember their number, then they
put all their sticks back in the cup. Players try to beat their score from
the last round.
THE LETTER BOX
Materials: one very large box, a hammer, some golf tees
Write whatever letters or letter teams your students are practicing on
the inside walls of the box. You can involve students of differing skill levels
in this activity by writing more difficult phonograms on one side of the
box, and easier ones on the other sides. Have one student sit inside the
box with the hammer and golf tees. A helpful adult or another student can
say the sound of a letter or letter team. The student hammers through
the matching letter or letter team. Have the student remove the golf tees
at the end of his/her turn. Warning! Not all students are ready to use a
hammer. Have a discussion about safety before going forward with this
activity.
COTTON BALL STRAW HOCKEY
Materials: cotton balls, | straw per student, tape, post-it notes
Write whatever letters or letter teams your students are practicing
on post-it notes. Make several “goals” out of tape on a table or on the
floor. Place the post-it notes next to the goals. Give each student a cotton
ball and a straw. Say a sound. The student blows the cotton ball into the
corresponding goal.

POM-POM CUPS
Materials: paper or plastic cups, pom-poms (or any other small object)
Turn the cups upside down. Write whatever letters or letter teams your
students are practicing on the cups. Line the cups up in a straight line
down the table. Have the kids close their eyes. Hide some pompoms under
several cups. (I usually put pom-poms under about 75% of the cups so
the kids get lots of “wins.”) They pick a cup by saying the SOUND that
the letter makes. Then they can pick up the cup and see if they “won” (I
don’t let them keep the pom-poms). If you are playing this with kids that
are working at various levels, make two lines of cups--one with easier
sounds and one with more difficult sounds.
E-RACE CARS
Materials: whiteboard or chalkboard, eraser
Write whatever letters or letter teams your students are learning
scattered around on a whiteboard. Say the sound of something on the
board, then the student “drives” their eraser to the corresponding letter
or letter team and erases it as quickly as they can. For some competition,
let two students play at the same time and race to be the first to find
the correct letter. For a fine motor variant, give your students Q-tips
instead of erasers. Make sure they hold the Q-tip like they would a pencil.
Erase the sounds by carefully tracing over the letters.
TWISTER READING
Materials: Twister mat, dry-erase marker
Use a dry-erase marker to write whatever letters or letter teams your
students are learning on a Twister mat. Have the students pick a color
and hop from dot to dot as they read whatever you have written on each
dot. Keep going until each student has read every color.
