ABSTRACT
With the increasing popularity of Facebook, students are joining and using it in
their social and academic lives. Huge popularity of Facebook among the freshmen
students has brought the researchers attention to investigate the phenomenon. Most
research regarding online social networks, particularly Facebook use has explored at
these networks in terms of profile management, identity creation and friending behavior.

This study investigates the Impact of Facebook on students’ academic performance
through search engine concept.
The purpose of this study Is to shed light on the Impact of Facebook as a search
engine among freshmen in the College of Industrial Education at TUP Manila and
specifically on the academic performance of the freshmen students of TUP Manila. This
research will identify when freshmen are impacted by their academic performances on
the usage of Facebook as a search engine using quantitative methods techniques to be
applied in this research study. For the completion of this study, the researchers will
select a random sample of freshmen students from the TUP Manila specifically in the
College of Industrial Education, and give them a questionnaire on how Facebook
affected their academic performance.
CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND
This chapter includes the introduction, which discusses the main and the
supporting ideas of the research work and why it should be conducted. This also
contains the Statement of the Problem that lists the question that should be answered
[Shortened Title up to 50 Characters] 7
by this work. Lastly, this contains the Significance of the Study, which enumerates the
specific groups that will benefit from this study.
Introduction
In the age of information and technology not only the technologies are influencing
our daily life but also they are becoming the part of our life. In other word, it has brought
the human being beyond the magic of ancient fairy tale stories and has entered into
new era of the online social network sites (OSNs) such as Facebook, MySpace,
LinkedIn, twitter and YouTube etc. This revolution has brought the new innovation in the
field of online social media which has change the traditional way of messaging into
modern way news posting or message posting. Recently it allow users to connect with
multiple communication channels, which facilitate private messages, public display
“walls”, updates status, instant messaging, groups and applications (Lampe et al. 2011).
Online social networks has now spread round the globe and Facebook is world’s largest
social network become so popular for young people that they hardly use email or other
way of communication (Kirkpatrick 2010, 85). People use Facebook to stay connected
with friends and family, to be informed and entertained within their social circle, and to
share and express what matters to them (Facebook facts, 2013).
Currently, social networks exist as a means to provide communication among
people regardless of location, enabling them to easily share information, have access to
files, pictures and videos, send messages, and conduct real-time conversations. Simply,
they allow easy and effective communication with colleagues and coworkers. Studies
[Shortened Title up to 50 Characters] 8
showed that social network tools support educational activities by facilitating interaction,
collaboration, active participation, resource sharing, and critical thinking (Ajjan &
Hartshorne, 2008; Selwyn, 2009). Using social networks in educational and instructional
contexts can be considered as a potentially powerful idea, simply because students
spend a lot of time on these online networking activities. Although university professors
have started to address this phenomenon, there have been only a limited number of
studies on social networks in education. As a new means of communication, Facebook
caters for a specific population whose members share a common interest in
communicating, exchanging ideas, and sharing information. This specific population can
be represented by any group of people in any society. Academic performance or
achievement is the outcome of education, the extent to which a student, teacher or
institution has achieved their educational goals. Academic performance is commonly
measured by examinations or continuous assessment but there is no general
agreement on how it is best tested or which aspects are most important, procedural
knowledge such as skills or declarative knowledge such as facts (Annie, Howard &
Mildred, 1996).
This study will explore the impact of Facebook on students’ academic
performance. What is the contribution of Facebook to generating or vanishing students’
social means during their academic and social lives? If you use internet you are
increasingly likely to use Facebook, it is the platform of the people to get more out of it
and new form of communication (Kirkpatrick 2010, 16).

Statement of the Problem
This research proposal entitled “Facebook as a search engine and Impact on
Academic Performances among selected Freshmen in the College of Industrial
Education at TUP Manila” aims to know if the use Facebook is distracting their studies
or it does not have any impact on students’ academic performance.
Specifically, it will find answers to the following questions:
1. What are freshmen student’s perceptions about Facebook usage?
2. What are the positive and negative impacts of Facebook to the selected
Freshmen in the College of Industrial Education at TUP Manila?
3. How can Facebook help the selected freshmen to improve their academic
performance?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant to the following:
Professors - this study will benefit them from the findings and its
recommendations. They would be able to observe and assess the students’
profile, behavior and academic performances especially those who have access
to electronic devices which can link to social networking sites like Facebook.
Students - this study will help them to be aware of the impact of the use of
Facebook, and be able to assess themselves on how academic performances
and behavior will affect their studies and on how to deal with it.
[Shortened Title up to 50 Characters] 10
Parents - for them to know their children’s profile on their academic
performances and will be able to coordinate with the teachers to improve and
maximize the capacity of parental guidance of their children.
Future Researcher - this study would serve as their reference materials
particularly those who have the intentions to conduct further studies related to
this one.

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
In this chapter, a detailed information on research methodology will be discussed.
To start with, the setting of the study were introduced, followed by a presentation of
research methods instrument, and data gathering procedure.
Locale
The research will be conducted at the Technological University of the Philippines
where the selected freshmen are the participants in this study. This research study may
be done face-to-face or though online.
[Shortened Title up to 50 Characters] 13
Instrumentation
Researcher-made questionnaires were used in conducting this study. The said
questionnaire was made of a checklist and divided into categories which would help in
gathering data. These questionnaires will be designed in a way that it shall meet the
main objective of the study which is to determine the impact of using Facebook to the
academic performances of the selected freshmen students. Scales were used to rate
the variables, being 4 as the highest scale which corresponds to Strongly Agree, and 1
as the lowest scale which corresponds to Strongly Disagree. The results will be tallied
and assessed accordingly.
Data Gathering Procedure
First, for the validation of the questionnaires, the researchers consulted their
instructor, and then they asked permission to grant the request, afterwards, the
researcher’s job was to ask permission from the selected freshmen students to allow
them to administer the distribution and retrieval of the questionnaire from the
respondents.
Next, upon distributing the questionnaires to the respondents. To gather
information, the researchers created an online questionnaire using Google Forms.
Then, these online questionnaires were distributed by the researchers to the selected
respondents through personal messaging. The researchers assure them of
confidentiality to be able to gain honesty in their responses.
[Shortened Title up to 50 Characters] 14
Lastly, the information obtained from the responses of the freshmen students was
gathered and tabulated. With that, the data required were analyzed and interpreted.
Conclusions and recommendations were made afterward.
Statistical Instrumentation
To interpret the gathered data, the researchers will use the following:
Mean, which is the result of the majority decision of answers based from the
survey or questionnaire. Simply, this describes the profile of the respondents.
Sample Size, which is the total number of respondents of the study. This part of
the formula to be used will always stay constant as 100, as this is the chosen
respondent population which cannot be altered in order to prevent falsifying data.
The following formula in order to achieve the percentage or statistical
presentation of the results:
%= X/N ×100
Wherein “x” is the mean or summed up total of answers from a certain question,
“n” is the fixed number of chosen respondents or sample size in the study and 100 is
the constant used to attain the percentage or generalized statistical presentation of
results.
